August 2011 Edition

The sweltering heat is here, so what better way to spend your summer days is there than playing with your friends at EdgeGamers Organization?

The EdgeGamers Newsletter Staff would like to point out that we have recently had a change in our domain name. The domain name is now www.edge-gamers.com. This change has affected many aspects of our Organization, including Ventrilo, which now requires you to use voice.edge-gamers.com (the port is the same as before).
For a further explanation on this please read this post, http://tinyurl.com/42slhp4 .

As for the news on the community, much happens each month in the various divisions. Please keep reading and find out more.

Day of Defeat

The Day of Defeat Source Division recently started the eGO Regional Scrim Tournament. This YoSpankDawg inspired event pits various regions of the United States and the world against each other. These battles have more on the line than just individual bragging rights -- hometown pride is also at stake. Registration for this one month long tournament remains open, and last minute backup mercenary positions are often avilable. Xiah (Europe), Gomezzz (North USA), and (IO) SA (North USA) have been early standouts.

EVE

I managed to hitch a ride through the wormhole and was piped aboard one of the EdgeGamers corp stations. FallenDream met me in the docking bay and gave me the nickel tour. OK, so my security clearance isn't high enough to see the really cool stuff behind those restricted access blast doors but I have to tell you what they showed me was enough to make me glad that I was on their side.

There’s lots of exciting news for the Strategy division this month! A new split-server world has just recently opened on Minecraft. This new world, called the Wild West, is purely survival. With the exception of boundaries, there are no rules and no limits. Feel free to harvest your own materials, or take someone else’s by force. Player versus Player is allowed everywhere apart from spawn, so you may kill to your heart’s content. Be a bandit or be the law, and make yourself a name in the Wild West today!

This month, the PSC will be hosting their monthly e-orientation event. This event introduces new recruits to our policies and our history. We encourage everyone to attend, as it can be a learning experience for even long time EdgeGamers members. The time and date of this event is still to be determined. So keep an eye out for the posting on the front page news.

Cullmann, one of the PSC Division Leaders, provides the following advice for eGO recruiters: "If you want to recruit members, remember to have fun doing it. It's always important to look out for divisional recruiting competitions as well".

The PSC Division is always looking for dedicated eG's and eGO's who would like to help out EdgeGamers. If you are interested, please PM any of the PSC Advisors and they will forward you an application.

Please remember to congratulate Scion, for being July's top recruiter!

In the upcoming months Battlefield will be bringing in at least one new Event Coordinator. However, there is no need to fear -- all of the existing events that you know and love, such as fun with mines, will still be held. If you are wondering, "How can mines be fun?" Well, watch this video and see for yourself http://tinyurl.com/3zvxdj5.

Next month Battlefield will be having another Tournament. Remember, the more people that sign up, the bigger the prizes. Past prizes have ranged from items in the Zazzle store to your very own reserved slot on the server.

Our congratulations go out to the Soaring Saboteurs on winning July's Conquest Tournament.

Some new game modes have been added to Spec Ops Fridays. Spooky Night Fight is a spin off of the old bloody night fight. However, the only thing set in stone will be what random game type is chosen along with some minor twists and turns. Old Western Showdown is a shotgun and desert eagle only battle; this event was submitted by Darkage. In an event submitted by Manasan, Zombie Survival, two people start off as the zombies trying to knife the rest of the enemy team. Sniper Night, as you may have guessed, is a sniper only night.

CoD recruiting is going well, numbers are still strong thanks to all the recruiters and their dedicated help.

A reminder that Kill of the Week is still going on and needs more attention. All you have to do is take a screenshot or a demo of what you think is your best kill for the week and then submit it to [email protected]. More details can be found here: http://tinyurl.com/3blmr3e.

Realism 5 came to a dramatic conclusion on the Donner battlefield. This reporter witnessed the event live (through the safety of our Source TV server), and I can tell you that the action was intense. Spartacus_Legolas led the Axis to a thrilling 3-1 winner-take-all playoff victory over the Tomi87 led Allies. Decisive flank attacks through the southern field split the allies in two and secured the victory. Be on the lookout for St0rmy to post Realism 6 information in the coming months.

The EdgeGamers 5th Birthday Bash, held on July 1, contained both impromptu events and promotions. 48 deserving DOD:S Division members received admin promotions for both their maturity and dedication to the Division.

DOD:S is currently supporting 6 dedicated servers (Avalanche, Charlie aka Strand, Donner, Kalt, Anzio, and Flash) as well as regularly scheduled member only events (Wednesday Gun Game, Thursday Wild Card Night, and, of course, Saturday Realism).

They are a blast!

Sadly the Brinks player following is in a free fall, and FPSX closed down one of the servers this month, and plans on closing the next one down the month after.

With the new Red Orchestra installment coming out we are considering phasing out the older servers, however this is just an idea at the moment.

Insurgency is still doing well with the great player base that it has always had.

There is a new contest that Icestyle has funded for recruiting: http://tinyurl.com/42gscat. The first person that gets sixty recruits, will receive any fifty dollar game on steam courtesy of Icestyle. There is also a rumor of cookies to be awarded as a prize as well.

In other news Half Life Two Deathmatch was added into one of the games supported by the FPSX division, if you have not been on it yet you should check it out.

As a whole FPSX is really a melting pot of new players coming in and sharing ideas, so come check out the FPSX division!

Additionally, Starcraft II is pleased to announce the new Team League Showdown. Games will be hosted every Sunday night at 8PM EST, with each match consisting of two four-player teams facing each other. Each team will assign one ace player who will battle one-on-one against the three regular players of the enemy team. Each win by the ace player will award his respective team one point and the team with the most points at the end of six matches will be declared the victor. In the event of a tie, each team will pick one non-ace player to battle. The winner of the best of three will lead his team to triumph. Are you ready to prove your skill?

Please welcome Legit Waffle as the newest League of Legends Event Coordinator! If you are a LoL member, you’ve probably been waiting for the second League of Legends Tournament. You can get ready for it by finding five other teammates to join you in combat. Please bear in mind that the tournament may be eGO-exclusive.

Furthermore, please help cheer on our World of Tanks members, who are in the midst of a clan war. They are representing EdgeGamers and battling enemy teams. Hopefully they do well!

World of Warcraft

World of Warcraft (WoW) is a massive multiplayer role playing game. It has been around for almost 7 years and has a player subscription of almost 11 million players. WoW is one of the most popular games in the world and the EdgeGamers WoW Division is quickly growing into one of our most popular divisions.

Currently, the division is working on obtaining the necessary gear to raid Firelands. A raid consists of either 10 or 25 people who band together in order to defeat Bosses that are impossible to defeat by yourself. Firelands contains bosses like Alysrazor (a spider covered in flames) and Ragnaros (a 50 foot tall spiraling pillar of fire who wields a glowing orange axe).

The WoW Division is working on a possible livestream raid of Firelands once all the guild members are prepared.

Also, during an impromptu parade of turtles in Dalaran, the EdgeGamers Guild became a huge hit on their server. To see what everyone is talking about check out the video http://tinyurl.com/3lmpq2m.

The CSS Division is proud of its most recent promotees, and wishes to honor them in the Newsletter. Send your congratulations and make them feel welcome in their new positions.

CSS has also seen the return of Advisor Fart Vader. He has come back from an extended break and will be leading the scrim team once again. Everybody give Fart Vader a warm re-welcome.

Class vs Class, a competition style event with prizes such as hats, had a record turnout. However, overall event turnout is low. Check out our calendar page for more info and participate in as many TF2 events as you can.

The TF2 Pathfinders are looking for six or seven dedicated members to be part of a new group that focuses on filling up and recruiting on only Egypt and Valve Maps (the two servers that are struggling the most) with emphasis on server rank and overall popularity. If this sounds like a job for you, please contact Dalsia, vudu or Storm.

TF2 also has a new server, on which Sloppie decided to bring back the PL Maps rotation. For those of you following VALVE maps, the server is doing better than before, however, it's still stuck in that gray area where it fills quickly but does not have a consistent user base. All the other servers are doing very well so keep up the good work. Blackmesa edged on the brink of being in the top fifty, but it dropped quite badly.

Valve maps brings in the most recruits so try to get in there and enroll some members. TF2 also gives out a recruiter of the month award, where the top performer has the opportunity to wear the "Recruiter" crown (a scout hat) for the entire next month, and receive a hat to keep permanently. Additionally, for every new member you bring in you will receive twenty thousand dollars in casino cash and for every tenth, a free hat.

The TF2 Division is planning some big events for August so please check out the division discussion for more information.

Overall TF2 has been doing amazing and is only at the tip of the iceberg. If you would like to help out the TF2 Division, recruiting is always appreciated.

Did you know that we currently have 137 members playing EVE? On any given night you can find between seven and thirty of them conducting missions. When I asked why I couldn't find the EVE activities on the calendar, the answer was chilling - "Loose lips sink ships". It seems the opposition peeks at EdgeGamers' public calendar and forums in the vain hope of getting intel. Of course, all of the real data is secured in the EVE private forums.

So what's a good strategy for a new player? Start with player vs environment to learn the ropes and build up some cash. Before you start with all the crazy weapons, tank up. Invest in armor and shields and the basics: engineering, electronics, sensors.

What's on FallenDream's wish list for his space station? If someone can come up with a way to cloak his space stations he would be very happy Division Leader indeed.
