According to Microsoft the issue is temporary and they are working to resolve it...
 
Was gonna say, if you can still find em, the Xbox 360 arcade is only 150, though it wont come with a HD. Its brand new and is only 150. I got the 20GB HD and haven't filled it up. I play games, beat the DLC (if there is any) and then delete it.

I want to play reach as well, but I'm going to wait for Windows 8 ($100 at lauch prolly) but sending in that RROD'd xbox would be the same price, so in your position, unless you were planning on getting Windows 8 for another reason on top of 360 games, I'd send in the xbox.

xbox 360s don't RROD as often as you think. Most times its a person's poor care of it that causes it. Don't forget the same rules apply for a 360 as a PC. Smoking is one of the major causes of RROD. I fix RROD'd 360s and you have no idea how many times I've seen tar buildup on the fans and the board itself. Some people just can't take care of their stuff. Also, I paid 50 bucks for my current xbox off of ebay, no cords or hard drive, but I had that stuff already :)

If your xbox is in warranty, most times Microsoft will take it in and fix it for free. It even comes with a prepaid box, also known as a coffin :)
