why do you need to upgrade?

do they play crysis or something?

nah the gpu and cpu have been acting wierd. the bios sees that the cpu is a tri core instead of a quad. and i have to go in unlock the core oc it to make it work right. the gpu is now making clicking sounds. i check the fans and they r all clear of dust. opened it up and no wires were contacting the fans at all. plus it has this funny smell of burnt rubber....

I doubt the CPU is clicking... but, it is possible that you have capacitors going bad. this would mess with power into the CPU which could drop a core because of it.

if your going to go to all this trouble to upgrade.... Id get a barebone system from NewEgg or Tiger and swap in what is worth salvageing from this old pc.

its not the cpu clicking its the gpu. im not really going to buy another bare bone system. figured i just upgrade the gpu cpu and psu. like

gpu SAPPHIRE 100314-3L Radeon HD 6870 1GB 256-bit GDDR5

psu CORSAIR Enthusiast Series CMPSU-650TX 650W

cpu AMD Phenom II X4 955

The 840 is not really a Phenom, kinda sneaky advertisement, it has no L3 cache. I've been running this chip for a few months and I'm honestly very happy with it. great proformance, idles at around 23 and full load in the mid-high 30s (depending on what I'm doing). I'd be keeping it but I've been waiting on the new Bulldozers.

umm so im going to keep a cpu that the fourth core just died on me.... i dont think so. plus this is not my gaming comp at all. more like a guest computer. as well i would like to use it to run a server for minecraft. so that some of my friends can play it on there. the 955 is worth it atm. no point having a cpu that the 4th core is now dead.

If you want an easy upgrade without changing the motherboard, a much better upgrade is going for the X6's since they're AM3 as well. A 6870 would be a really nice upgrade from the 260

i was thinking of upgrading to the x6's but i do not know much about them. or which one to get in that fact.

Well they run very similar to X4 except with 2 extra cores. Some say 6 cores are useless for games since most games are optimized for 4 cores, but bf3 is shown to be optimized for up to 8 cores, so 6 cores are going to be running preeetty sweet. Also with turbo boost, if a game isn't using all cores and lets say most of 3 and a little bit of 4, it will turn off 4 5 and 6 and boost cores 1-3 to 3.7ghz. I think it's a great buy.

dang. the question is which one do i get

Which "ones" are you talking about? The 955 BE or the 1100T?

Going from the 840 to the 955 isn't much of an upgrade, going from the 840 to the 1100T is a great upgrade.
