Tribes Ascend Anyone?

:O Free to play :D

Hopefully its not pay to win :/

Just looked it up. Tribes is following a TF2 style F2P platform, and letting people level up to get weapons, but also let them spend money to get them faster, along with cosmetic items that don't effect gameplay.

Yes, yes and yes!

Too bad I was never good with that spinfuzor (sp?). This game had me saying Shazbot often!

I hate Hi-Rez for setting it up as a freemium game. Free to play, but pay a premium to advance quicker. And why are they not allowing user created servers?! That was the biggest plus for Tribes and Tribes 2, having 3rd party servers created, with a variety of mod tools enabled.

I completely agree with this! Some of my favorite servers on Tribes were custom servers. I loved playing on the build mod servers, RPG servers, as well as paintball mod servers.

call me old fashion... but i like to play games the way they are intended. If you are getting a game because of mods, and disliking it because its not allowing mods, then you are making your decision on something that doesn't even involve the game in the first place. and there's nothing wrong with a free to play game that allows you to purchase things to advance quicker. its called contributing to the developers. When a game is "free to play" everyone instantly becomes greedy and thinks they are entitled to the same game as people who actually donate. ultimately leading to people "dis liking the game" i notice more and more people dis liking games for the wrong reasons before they even come out on this forum. just like the Diablo 3 thread.

I'd have to disagree about the mods. Lots of great games originally started as nothing more than a mod inside of a game. Counter Strike, one of the most popular PC games ever, started as nothing more than a mod inside of Half Life.

DOTA is another game that started as a mod inside of another game.

Lots of games thrive due to their modding community, especially games like Starcraft and Starcraft II.

Also, I understand the whole free to play, pay to advance type of games, but that isn't the ideal model that the games should run by. If you have played League of Legends, I think that they have the perfect premium system.

No matter how much money you spend, it won't allow you an advantage over another person, but it will allow you to make yourself stand out by having special skins.

It also allows you to purchase additional champions, but those champions can also be unlocked through normal gameplay.

To me, this is a fair way to do things. Lots of people opt to customize their characters with skins, but it in no way gives you an unfair advantage over other players in game.

I never said I hated mods. If you look at the diablo thread, I actually brought that up. I know that almost all of our games these days came from mods. Believe me. But we are past the stages of modding a game inside the game and puting up servers for it. With t hg e psn network, xbox live arcade, and steam, its actually easier to just take the source code, develop a game, and publish it as a stand alone client. There is no reason to decide your purchase on a game based on mod support or not. Thats what im saying. I agree with what you say about mods being important in the past. But those days are over, and are actually better for developers.

"im saying dont bypass a game just because they decide to not have mod support"

Same with diablo 3.

I think you didn't understand my point. Having 3rd party servers are great because it allows servers to create mods to not just change the gameplay, but to also admin (think Echelon and Maul). I hate the freemium concept as I think it actually DOES affect the gameplay. Letting players to buy new armor and weapons to get ahead of the normal "leveling" system in the game will affect the gameplay and balance. And once all the armor and weapons are "unlocked," there will be no additional revenue for the company. Just charge the $60 upfront for all players, and discount the price after several months to a year. If a game is worth $60, I'll pay it gladly. But the freemium concept is just tempting me and others to avoid paying a cent for it, for a game that developers deserves to be earning money for (assuming it is a great game).

I also never said Hi-Rez isn't going to support mod tools. They're not supporting it initially, but they will release it later after release. If they decide to not allow mod support, that's just a dumb decision, in my opinion. Leave it up to the community to decide if a game mod would be better than the original. Deciding to not allow mods would actually just take away a positive characteristic to the game, and instead, give it a negative limitation.

My beef is no 3rd-party servers allowed. That decision CAN kill this game right from the start. One of the best parts of Tribes was playing in a 16v16 server, 8v8, or even 64v64. If Hi-Rez didn't kill 3rd party servers, just think, eGO could actually be hosting game servers for it, and be the #1 gaming server in another PC game, not to mention a new audience to recruit from and have fun gaming with. But instead, Hi-Rez is going to imitate the MW2 concept, with the company providing the servers, and more or less likely, the anti-hack support. And we all remember how that worked with MW2, don't we?

To sum up: If Hi-Rez Studios is tryiing to capture the magic that the Tribes series was (ignoring Vengeance, we don't speak of that game), they need to include not just the gaming magic, but the technical magic in regards to servers.

FYI: There are still Tribes 2 servers being supported to this day. Katabatica anyone?

well think of it this way, Hi-Rez has aimbotting issues and cheaters in all their releases. they dont take the time to suport patches or software to prevent cheaters from hacking in the game. Lets just pray thats because they were taking all their time developing tribes ascend, and ignoring their other games.
