Vanilla server. PLEASE READ.

One suggestion: a Vanilla Black Mesa server. The regular BM server is at capacity during prime time, so another server running it might not be a bad idea.

I don't know. If we were to have a vanilla server I'd rather it be vanilla maps as well.

This would be impossible to actually have an official "vanilla" server, right? It seems like every time I hop on over to the steam forums to look for a trade I see a thread about giving servers a while/blacklist of weapons, and valve's never implemented it.

At best it seems we could have an event where we mutually agreed to use vanilla weapons, or the server "just happened" to lose connection to steam?

Wrong, if you can't make a whitelist, why can we restrict weps on our league server?

Now back to the idea; I see 3 main issues:

1. Another one of those situations where we get a new server and people say "I'll be on there every second of every day of every week!" In reality, the people might not even be on the server for a full week and the server eventually dies.

2. Every new weapon update, a whitelist update needs to occur. Valve has tendencies to make OP weapons and all that, but the server would also be horribly empty as everyone wants to use the new weps and we don't allow them.

3. A lot of the variety and fun in tf2 is with ALL of the weps. After a while, trust me, it'll get boring.

None of this bodes well for a server.

There are "vanilla" mods out there. And this is not the first time it's been discussed; here or in Leadership channels.

It's not tf2 without hats.

I knew there was a reason you were on my friends list.

Warpath
Convoy
Turbine
Dustbowl
KOTH
Toyfort
I'm sure I'm forgetting a few.

I WILL play on this server 24/7! But maybe there should be 2 BM's, one regular, one Vanilla. I can smell the fun.

YEEEEES! YES YES YES! BM would be EPIC as vanilla. prolly more so than 2fort. But that's just my opinion

And now that you mention it, it would make sense to have vanilla guns on a vanilla map.

Agree. I like some of the vanilla weapons, but after a while it would just get old. Plus, what do I do without my strange weapons? Preposterous...

When it gets old, just switch back to regular servers. It's just one server.

And Sequel, I see your point. YES, people might not play it when there's a new update, and YES, I like the variety too. I've said it before, and I'll say it again, I LOVE MY PISS-GUN (The Sydney Sleeper). But sometimes, everyone just wants to get back to simplicity. And YES, There is a chance people will get bored of it, but just give it a chance. we DID just get that expirimental server, maybe we could vanillize it? I have confidence in the belief that this server will work. It might be a little on the downside from time to time, like DoD:S's Kalt. I'll go on and it will be a GHOST TOWN; but that doesn't mean I can't invite and get people to play it! If I can get Kalt started, I'm SURE I or someone else can get the vanilla server started.

Also, I can see how you like the hats, but aren't you willing to give up something that you CAN'T SEE, CAN'T FEEL, and CAN'T USE for good old time's sake? You'll only have to not wear the hats sometimes, when you're playing the server, anyway.

Thank you, everyone, for the comments and for reading the thread :)

Yeah but Warpath & Turbine were the victims of the dreaded server ip change just before they started slipping. The eGO Warpath server was my favorite server & a good part of the reason I joined eGO (a little of the blame goes to AzzNik though :P)

1. DON'T MESS WITH MAH HATS BOY! No, but I'm sure there's a way to disable the new weps and not the hats.

2. No way in hell we get two Blackmesas. It's a great map, but supply must meet demand, and it is. As far as I know, we have the only 24/7 mesa server, and it fills pretty well; however, two of them would not work when one has vanilla weapons on it. You are attracting old style TF2 players on a map they've never heard of, bad combination, makes for empty servers.

3. Back to what you said, we do have an experimental server, but nothing is finalized yet. We need to get everyone's opinions and figure out what makes the most sense if the server even gets a rotation on it.

4. If we listened to every server suggestion and tried every one, we'd never get anything done with a server. Just trying something can be a big effort. In the scheme of things, this could be an option, but once again there are always a billion different suggestions for a server.

Don't expect one night of fun in TF2 to be the be all/end all, if you know what I mean. I'm not even sure how much you've played vanilla, butbone of the main complaints of the console game was that they weren't updating it.

it's funny someone posted this about mesa because when i was playing on insta respawn i said the same thing about 2 fort we should have RETRO SERVERS!!!

Maybe not 100% vanilla but accepted scrim weapons? The game almost feels empty without items like sandvich and equalizer. But I do agree, i enjoyed the vanilla server a lot.

Up front it sounds nice and some would probably join, but doubt the server would ever get filled.

This, it sounds like a great idea, and I'd play it for a bit, but I doubt it would get filled very easily. Who knows, I may be wrong though, and I would very much enjoy a server like this even if it was filled or not.
Dropbox it.

i haven't read the threads other than the first one but i would like to say that while mesa was "vanilla" it was one half to one quarter full.

that is why a vanilla server will not work....

Indeed. I know I wasn't playing on Blackmesa that day. As much as Kevi swears by it, I detest the Scattergun. That being said, I'm a proponent of making this an occasional event (True Retro Night or something like that) as a change of pace from Cow Manglers and Demoknights.

I see your points about Black Mesa. I didn't think that they wouldn't play on it because it isn't valve or they've never heard of it, but it does seem true. So, that pretty much rules out Black Mesa; But we've got tons of other valve maps to use like 2fort. Or we could do some of the cart maps (not a huge fan of cart, but if it's our all vanilla server i'd play it a lot).

And Sequel, I've played more than just one night of vanilla. I was playing before there were any new weapons. And before I joined eGO, actually.

Plus, if we could disable the new weapons and not hats, It would bring more people to play it. I didn't think we could do that, but if we can, I really like that idea.

And guys, When I play, If I notice one of the servers I want to play on is empty, guess what I do. I PLAY ANYWAY! And I invite people and steam chat them to get them to come play. Then I tell them to invite people. It doesn't always work, and it doesn't always get filled. Especially not right away. But (and I know when some of you say that it won't always be filled, you're talking about when you aren't on steam or TF2) don't complain about how you can't play it because it's empty and you have to wait for someone to start it up. Start it up yourself.

so after i get the kids to bed and lunch packed and work clothes laid out for the next day and i have 60 minutes to play before bed i can either:

a. seed a server and hope others join
b. join a server that has others already playing on it
c. banana

which one you think i'm gonna choose? o.0

mesa always stays full when i have the time to play except when steam was down the other day :)

vanilla for stock maps maybe. vanilla is just too vanilla

Soo, If I was to play selective Devil's Advocate, and spin a couple of the "in-the-negative" comments a different way...

1) TF2, when it had just vanilla weapons (you could argue when that point was in the past) was no fun, and no one played it, and we were all bored with it?

and

2) No new map/server will ever be successful because other new map/servers in the past weren't succesful (because of x,y,z)?

Oh, and one other thought; imo, most people return to play a map after having played it once due to the people they played with much more than the map itself. I could see a map/server like this filling due to the number of nice folks (like you and me!) who would play it.

but tf2 was not "vanilla" when there were no updates. i like vanilla but now i have tasted mint chocolate chip. vanilla is to be reserved for apple pie.

now i'm hungry
