Is this worth the money and all the hype or is it one of those "I'll play for a week and that's the last I'll see of it" sort of game?

You know, my cousin gifted me this game and I haven't gotten around to it. Wish I could help you!

It looks neat though. Someone on my steam friend's list said something like "wait for it to go on sale, otherwise stick to Minecraft" if that helps. I don't remember if that came from another eGO member or my cousin.

I have way more fun playing Terraria than Minecraft, only because I love exploring & Terraria gives you a reason to explore for better loot. Plus I like the side scrolling view, it reminds me of old school games like Castlevania. The boss battles are pretty fun too. *edit* It's well worth $5.00 in my opinion.

Yeah that's what I've been hearing alot about the game. I actually have MC and played it for a looong time but it feels like it's pointless playing the game. You can build super crazy things but what's the point in it all? I like how terreria has has RPG elements like making armor and fighting bosses, reminds me of FF1

I'm real close into buying the game. I've read it's super worth 10 dollars, and for 5? I spent 60 dollars on black ops and I barely played it. I know if I don't spend the 5 soon I'm going to throw it away at McDonalds or Beer or something -___-

its minecraft, 2d, but with more ingame content (if u dont count the mods in Minecraft), The game focus;s more on finding stuff, and less on building, and mine-craft is the opposite

It's like a Minecraft Side scroller, I'd say watch some gameplay videos of it on Youtube from Seananners and see if you still like it.

That review was depressing :
I agree with what he said about playing it for 5 minutes & not liking it. When I first got it when it released I played it for like 10 minutes & didn't really like it. I gave it another shot a few weeks ago & now I have 78 hours played. It just takes a little while to get the hang of it. It's kind of like how they say play Minecraft for an hour & you're hooked...Terraria took 2-3 hours to get me hooked.

I just bought the game and that just happened. I'm definitely going to try it again. Thanks for all the feedback btw. I'm sure I will enjoy this game a lot :D

To sum up: Game is Minecraft as a 2D side scroller with bigger emphasis on crafting and adventuring. It lacks a tutorial except for the guide, who reminds me why Clippy must Die! But with the bevy of online tutorials and guides for this game, it's deceptively addicting, making you think you're just giving it a try, and two hours later, you're stuck trying to find that iron and copper ore to finish making your armor set...

BTW, I think this game becomes a LOT more fun when you have a group of friends to play with. Look for Cupquake or Sea Nanners on youtube, and you'll see what i mean.

But will people who hate Minecraft like it?

Wut? I think a lot of people who play terreria played mc at one point. Thing is, I really enjoyed MC but I felt like it lacked direction. I think I will enjoy terreria a lot more since it has RPG elements :) and I <3 RPG's!

a friend of mine (frederick176) bought it for me because i was like completely addicted 2 minecraft so when he bought it for me i tried it out the first hours were quite strange because i didnt know anything about the items etc in the game then after a week or so i had 50 hours on it... (in my test week @ school (gf grades) but i barely made the year so no probs) and now i have about a 100 hour time on the game its a lovely game and its still fun for me if you like exploring caves fighting bosses etc then you would love this game

100% agree with tthat to be honest :p

Yeah. I didn't like it for the first half hour, I couldn't figure out how to build a house! I kept making wood walls and was so confused when monsters could still bypass them.

Once I realized you just had to put normal wood down it got much better lol.

Mind you I just started playing it Wednesday. I have 19 hours in so far lol. Pretty much the only time I'm stopping is when I need to be somewhere (work, bed, Church, etc). I am thoroughly enjoying this game. Last night my room mate and I teamed up to take down the Eye of Cthulu. It was a lot of fun!

In short, loving this game!

Imo, I prefer MC due to the 3D world gives me more to go buy, and there's still plenty to do with it. I tried Terrerria and just couldn't find myself getting into it. I like the RPG style, but MC has more of a survival element (with more stuff to come too), which is what I prefer in a sandbox styled game.

But to each his/her own. If you enjoy it, then I'm just as glad for you! :]

Honestly, I didn't really think I'd like this game when I bought it... I didn't like it at all when I played it for a few minutes. I even tried mining with friends, we'd switch off guard positions in caves and etc, and that was pretty fun for a bit.

After that, I put it down, and didn't really spend more than an hour on it in all. I had hardly any good items, mediocre gear (silver/gold), and didn't feel like it was totally challenging and it becomes way too repetative.

...or so I thought when this topic encouraged me to spend 20 hours in the past couple days, experiencing what Terraria is all about. I realized that, since I was playing it too much like Minecraft. Just like our fabulous GameRom reviewer said, you cannot compare the two, nor can you really transfer knowledge from both games.

Terraria isn't about mining, or building. (Though, you CAN create some impressive structures, signs, or whatever your heart desires.) It's more focused on NPCs, getting money, gearing up, and killing stuff.

Probably one of the coolest things you can do is fight one of the three bosses (Or all three if you're on a server and you're up to a completely insane challenge) in mid air using a Gravitation potion to fly, spam arrows, spells, and whatever other ranged weapons and have an epic battle in the sky. (Probably worth the few hours of collecting items, since you can reuse them, or buy more from other people -- since Terraria has that GREAT feature where your inventory travels with you from server to server and if you set yourself on Softcore, you don't drop your items on death.)

Even increasing the number of enemies doesn't dull the game. Fighting off 4 Eye of Cthulus (One of the main bosses) is just one combination of enemies to test your skills and gear; and believe me, there might be a gear cap, a health cap and mana cap, but the skill and just number of combinations of buffs and weaponry enhances the overall experience. Despite the number of enemies and number of failed attempts, I can promise you, there is no end to the complexity and skill you can use in this game to overcome any challenge. Even starting out again with complete copper gear and 100 health makes things interesting from time to time.

This is one of those indie games where it strives to make you push yourself to accomplish a task. Like Super Meat Boy, or VVVVVV, you will rage, you will get mad at the game, it might get repetative, but there is skill and this game has so much potential that people cannot see in the first few minutes of gameplay. It's JUST like Minecraft in that regard (Not the gameplay, just the starting bit.), you have no idea what you're doing, you are unaware of the potential, you don't know half of the possibilities. It's just a bit more slow paced in the beginning, but it will get so much better with time.

TL;DR

I know the $5 sale was over, but if you have any doubts, and you already purchased it, try it with some friends, even try inventory hacking to get a taste of what is achievable. (But of course, don't abuse/spoil yourself.) Try a few bosses, try some servers.

^^My disorganized rambling review ;)

Bought this game a long time ago, got everything with my brothers, set it down until the latest update. New update added so much stuff that we started over.

I've now sunk over 100 hours into the game.

Also, the typo in the title makes everyone else spell Terraria wrong.
