Gaming Laptop choice

So I'm trying to pick out a gaming laptop, and I am stuck between the ASUS g73 and g74. They're both on Tigerdirect, and I cant decide if the $300 price increase is worth it or not for the g74.

As far as I can tell, the only differences these laptops have (specs wise) is 4gb more memory and a newer GPU in the g74. The g73 right now is about $1200 and the g74 is $1500. Help? I'd like to pick one of these two, or something of a similar caliber that doesn't go over $1500. Any sort of input is welcome. Thanks gents!

I was looking myself. And after the first of the year i will for sure be going with the G74. I think it is for sure worth the extra 300. Especially for the 3GB video ram if nothing else. Lets you bump up you image quality settings a good deal more. And I am not positive but I believe the G74 has a better Sandy Bridge chip in it.
 
you missed something:

The G74 has 3 USB 3.0 ports and 1 USB 2.0 port

The G73 has 1 USB 3.0 port and 3 USB 2.0 ports

For only 300 dollars, considering the upgraded video card (which has twice the GPU RAM) and the upgraded USB ports, I would definitely go with the G74.

I did miss the USB ports, that shifts it.

Notebookcheck.net says the g74's card (560m) performs an average of 13% better than the g73's 460m. Coupled with the extra system RAM and USB 3.0 ports I'll end up getting the g74 most likely.
 
Waste of money. 8gb is plenty of ram. 1.5 gb vram is plenty for 1080p. 3 usb 3.0 ports vs 1? 1 seems like enough. Do you even have anything that uses usb 3.0? Save the money and get the $300 cheaper one.

Furthermore, looks like it has an additional slot for a second hard drive. Use the saved money to buy an SSD. You will love that upgrade over anything the G74 would offer upgrade wise.

I'd hate to say it, But you can get more for your buck if you go through building your own tower.
 
The 460m and 560m are the same chip (assuming you don't buy the best buy version of the G74). The only thing that differs in this case is vram, but at 1080p, 1.5GB is already over the top, 3GB is just a waste of resources and money.

GTX 460m = 192 SPs / 192bit bus / core675mhz / mem 1250mhz

GTX 560m = 192 SPs / 192bit bus (128 on the best buy version)/ 775MHz core / 1250 mhz mem

The 560m just has a higher stock clock speed, which is my experience is easilly obtainable on the 460m.

Seems like a complete and total waste of $300 to get the G74

Honestly, the extra VRAM means absolutely nothing for a laptop. 1.5GB will be plenty for that screen. The 12GB of RAM is absurd overkill. If you actually use USB 3.0 maybe that'll make a difference but I sure don't. So really, what I'm seeing is $300 for 13% increase in graphics power? I'd go with the G73. Huck's suggestion of an SSD isn't a bad idea either if you just want to spend that money.

I suppose you walk around with a tower strapped to your back pushing a generator on wheels.

I really do not understand why laptop graphics cards are equipped with more vram then desktop ones. This makes no sense!

I have the hp Dv6-3210us and i love it. It has a raedon hd 4250 mobility graphics card. 4.0 Ghz speed and 4 gigz of ram. I can average about 200fps in counter-strike source. It only costed me 500 so it is a relatively cheap gaming laptop. I reccoment it, and love it.
