Honoring the Uniform

As some of you know, my family has a history in the military. And from the day I popped into the world, I was adorned with the stories of feats of heroes in the military. I noticed that the most we have is medals honoring the men and women of the uniform (not just military but police, firefighters, etc). I think we should do a bit more, go the extra mile and let more of the eGO community learn more about the uniform. I think the best way to do this is through stories.

I am asking all eGO/non-eGO members who have/are serving in the military, or any other service to please post a story of your experience. It can be anything that you have experienced in your service. I understand if some people don't wish to post their story but I think it is the best way to get you heard and to give people an insight on the road you chose and what it was like, in a time of disillusionment, an era where that 40's patriotism is rare find and not a standard.

If we have a lot of participation and/or a lot of interest, we can expand this into something bigger. I know I'm only a new member so I might not know everyone but please don't let me stop you from doing this.

I'm looking forward to your stories. I think this is a better way to learn about just how much these people sacrificed for us. I think the least we can do is listen to their stories.

Posting stories about peoples time in the service is hardly political. I dont see how an arguement could stem from it - those who have served do deserve the utmost respect for risking their lives, and spending time away from home to serve.

I personally just took my ASVAB yesterday, and my recruiter told me I kicked ass on it. I look forward to joining.

Thats debatable, which is why I made my former post. Who decided that? There have been some malicious people in the military, do they deserve respect too?

If you're making a thread about good stories in the military that honor the uniform why can't other people make threads about bad stuff in the military? Because its political.

I've had threads of mine locked before for less.

When you see someone in public wearing a uniform, do you go up to them and say "I got my eye on you! I don't know if you're good or bad!" ... or do you say "Thank you for serving!"

When an elderly man, or woman, is seen wearing a Veteran's cap .. do you truly ponder to yourself if they were a douche in the military, or do you think, "Thank you for serving!"

If either of those, you don't think or say "Thank you for serving", then I recommend you just leave the thread. All you are doing is trying to start trouble. I suspect anyone in eGO who has served is mature and smart enough to know what, and what not, to post on this subject.

The "bad stories" are what you see in the news and what is heard on a daily bases, these stories being told are what people experience during a work day i.e " I was doing my last round of the night on sunday and a deer almost attacked me." its the same as if a friend had a funny story to tell you if he called you. In no way is that political at all... not even a hint of it.

BTW that deer story was true... scary crap.

In this case, nobody would have brought that up but you. So no, It's not political.
Let's not get this thread closed, I want to read some good stories.

I am in the military, this is true, but that doesn't mean people with good NON-POLITICAL stories should not be able to talk about it here.
Its a story about work, NOT POLITICAL WORK.

Well, I would appreciate it if we could leave the arguments outside of this thread.
This thread isn't a place for people to argue. If you have questions about the military, about what being a police officer is like or any questions for our veterans, please ask them but please do not argue here. I find it highly disrespectful. I would rather have this thread closed than have it full of people bickering.

If this does continue, I am prepared to ask leadership to close it down and the entire planned project.

My grandfathers brother flew bombers over Japanese-occupied territories in WWII. He always carried his M1911 in case he was ever shot down by the Japanese. He later told my grandpa "I did everything with the M1911 except use it on a Jap".

My grandpa has his M1911 now as his brother passed away, and I look forward to shooting it.

My grandfathers personal story was in Korea - he was in the Navy and his battleship had to rescue another ship that was sinking. (Don't know many details about it)

My brother-in-law was in the Marines before Operation Desert Storm. He said during training they were doing a simulated battle against each other in the forest. He had to take a dump so he left his squad to squat behind a tree. The training exercise ended in the midst of him relieving himself; they came and found him and he couldn't finish cleaning up. x_x lol

Nothing too amazing, but I never really talked to the few members of my family who have served about their time serving.

That bit about your grandfather sounds interesting. You should get in touch with your grandfather and talk with him more. Personally, my grandfather and my dad tell me without me asking.

My grandfather was at pearl harbor when the Japanese came. He wasn't too badly injured, just when he fell out of bed after an explosion. He helped a bunch of other sailors who were in the water. I'm going go visit him again and ask him more about it.

My father served in the gulf. He was a softy, compared to some of the others. But he said that it was very exciting. My dad also met the president once too in Saudi Arabia. Pretty nifty.

When my dad married my mom (Mom is Japanese, my dad is American), my grandfather wasn't too happy about it but he got over it (now they are really close friends).

Hey you know, it might not sound exciting but we can never experience it the way they did. Mere words don't do it justice. Every little story is important, just like how every soldier is important. Everyone of them is a hero for putting their lives on the line.

Just want to say: Don't try and turn this into something it's not.

Anyway, my grandfather worked on an airbase along the Burma Road during WWII.

He doesn't talk about it much, and the one time I asked him about it he didn't really tell me much other than he remembers how the Japanese would launch bombing runs on the airfield and how he'd have to help repair it.

Yea from what I remember from history, during the pacific Campaign, the landing strips on the Japanese islands were really important for resupplies and refueling for bombers on bombing runs in Tokyo.

You people have to understand that both sides of the camp have different views on the situation. Looking form the United States side, we looked on the Imperialistic Japanese as the bad guys in WW2. While the Japanese viewed us as the bad guys.

You have to remember the one who fights for what you believe in and you msut follow that path.

Now, before this thread is locked, I would have to disagree, in the most part, with TsukasaY. War brings out the worst and best in people,troops that have served their time over the sea or abroad at home. Telling their combat stories could bring back up hidden emotions.

(I know I talked political, but I do what I must to share my opinion.)
