First of all I would like to say, "Thank you" to all of you who have served! Regardless of what you did or what happened when you were serving, you still chose to volunteer and serve. That, in and of itself, makes me respect you guys a lot.
My grandfather was a nose gunner in a B-24 during WWII. He was involved with the liberation of Sicily and was always making bombing runs into Europe. He was shot down over Poland and was captured by the Russians. He was exchanged for some Russian prisoners that the Americans had and was able to return to duty. Soon after that, the war in Europe was over.
My grandfather died when I was very young, 5 or 6. So I never got to talk to him about his experiences or really even know him for that matter. I do wish that I could have talked with him. I have a picture of him in uniform sitting on my desk all the time to remind me of the countless numbers of those who have gone before and served! Thank you guys!
