RAM Latency Question

Which is better? 7 latency 1600mhz or 9 latency 2200mhz. Will the 9 latency @ 2200mhz run faster than the 1600mhz @ 7 latency?

In the Asus Maximus IV Z68 @ 2200mhz, the ram will be auto down clocked to 2133mhz. The 1600mhz will either stay the same or be down clocked to 1333mhz. I'm looking at 8 gigs of ram.

Should I also go with 4 x 2gig sticks or 2 x 4gig sticks. Does it make a big difference?

2133 CL9 will be about the same as 1600 CL7 (guessing 7-8-7-21 or similar? if it is like 7-10-10-24 or something stupid like that, then the 2.1GHz will win)

2X4G will be easier to hit higher speeds with. less stress on the IMC, plus it leaves you room for expansion

What sticks are you looking at? The ICs used can help me determine which is better too.
 
Honestly, it doesn't matter. With DDR2 or DDR3, your latency is only going to be a few picoseconds difference with them. You wouldn't notice the difference.

G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL7D-8GBXH. Timing: 7-8-7-24. I was told on a Youtube reply that I can use 6-8-6-20-1T timings also for this 7 latency RAM. Now This ram was recommended to me by a G.Skill represenative over the 9 latency ram that I was interested in which I mentioned below. Except the ram that I was interested in was 2200mhz, not 2133mhz. But newegg.com stop carrying the 2200mhz, 9 latency ram that I initially wanted.


Looking to use the Asus Maximus IV Extreme Motherboard.

P.S. was also considering G.SKILL Ripjaws X + Turbulence II Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2133 (PC3 17000) Desktop Memory Model F3-17000CL9D-8GBXLD. Timing: 9-11-9-28.

And seeing if I can achieve at least 2133mhz. My mobo is kind of funny. 2333mhz will be down clocked to 2133, 2250mhz will be down clocked to 2133, 2200 will be down clocked to 2133, 2000 will be down clocked to 1866 and 1800 will be down clocked to 1600 according to the Asus Motherboard Manual section 2-5.

Will increasing my RAM Speeds make my gaming performance much better?

Also, I'm will be using 1 LCD monitor, wide-screen. 1920x1200. Looking at getting two EVGA GTX-580 in SLI Mode. But I have two options to choose from. You can either get the cards in 1.5 gig of VRAM or 3.0 gigs of VRAM. Will there be any difference on the performance in VRAM quantities? Should I opt for the 3.0 gig ram? The 1.5 gig ram card is pre-overclocked to 850mhz. The 3.0 gig ram card is at stock 772mhz. I was going to overclock the 772 to 875 or maybe push it too 900mhz.

Any suggestions?

unless you are a bench nut, anything past 1600 CL9 is not going to show much improvement.

Overclocking is not garaunteed. Sometimes you can get PSC/bbse CL7 kits to run at cl6, it really depends on the ICs used at the time.

As for the board being "funny" all sandy bridge boards are like that. SB only supports 800/1066/1333/1600/1866/2133 dividers.

at ~1080p res, 1.5 is already overkill
 
With the speed of today's computers, RAM latency is not going to make a huge difference. System bottleknecks normally occur with storage devices.
