Laptop Help - Blue Scren

I found my laptop that my cousin gave me about 2 years ago and it always worked fine. When I tried it, I got the blue screen thing. It is a Compaq and is currently running Windows XP. I tried putting Windows 7 on it and it still brought up the blue screen. Any help? If you need any more info, let me know.

This would help. We need to determine if it is a hard drive problem, motherboard, etc.

Sorry I haven't been able to post an update. I got it to work again. I just had to reinstall Windows XP on it. I'll upgrade it to Windows 7 when I get the chance. Requesting lock, please.

FYI, Upgrading may not be the best option if the bluescreen points to faulty hardware. It's best to test it out and see what the problem is and then decide from there. If you upgrade on faulty hardware, you'll have the same or similar problems without solving anything. Though if the problem was software related (bad or corrupt driver, poorly written program, spyware/virus, incompatible programs, etc) then upgrading may solve the problem. Better to troubleshoot if you can though.
