EdgeGamers Organization Newsletter
September 2011 Edition

Another month, another round of leadership promotions. We have seen a swell in the ranks of Division Leaders (DL) and Advisors in the last month. There were so many promotions that you must read up on them in the individual divisions' articles. The prestigious Medal of Honor has been awarded to some very dedicated members of our community, and we wish to congratulate and thank IceStyle and Deacon for their hard work on our behalf. Deacon in particular warrants mention since he has been working with us since the very beginning to keep the website up and running. For this we extend a heartfelt thank you.

We would also like to point our dedicated readers to the new graphics that have been implemented to improve the readability of the newsletter. Without further ado, please continue reading about what is new and interesting in eGO, and get a peek at what is to come.

Meet the Leadership

I would like to present to you, one of EdgeGamers newest Division Leaders: C-WHiT.
You might ask, "Who is C-WHiT?" Well, in my opinion he happens to be the sexiest, funniest, and most intelligent member eGO has on the roster. Hold on ladies...he's currently married to the oldest division in eGO: Day of Defeat:Source.

The Thread of the Month

It is with joy and anticipation that we introduce a new feature of the EdgeGamers Newsletter, the Thread of the Month. Every month we shall accept proposals for the Thread of the Month from you. The only restrictions are that the thread must be found on a public forum and it must have been created in the month prior to the current Newsletter.

Admin Training

This month we would like to step outside of the division specific reporting and cover a story that we hope will be of interest to all members --Admin Training. No matter what your rank, you have probably been on one of our servers when someone did something against our Code of Conduct. Odds are, someone with an eG or an eGO tag stepped in and dealt with the situation in a calm, courteous manner.

Battlefield

The coming holiday months herald the release of the best titles from the most well-known video game studios. For the First-Person-Shooter community, this means Battlefield 3. In anticipation of the upcoming release of this titanic game, the Battlefield Division is thriving.
Since the beginning of August, the Battlefield Division has seen an increase in recruitment -- in fact, the best month in recent history. In the coming weeks there will be a big announcement for a recruiting drive for the month of October, so keep your night-vision goggles clear and focused.

Call of Duty

Call of Duty is one of the smallest divisions of EdgeGamers. With the release of Black Ops, the division did not experience the surge it expected when a new game is released. Generally a flood of new players find themselves enjoying the company of eGO and some stay with the community to help admin. However, the division is steadily growing through recruiting efforts.

Counter Strike

Since the early 2000's, Valve's modded tactical game, Counter-Strike, has dominated the first person shooter market, recognized as one of the most popular PC games of all time. With it's rich and famous culture for professional and league gaming, Counter-Strike has reigned for twelve years, keeping it's legacy as a top tactical first person shooter. Counter-Strike: Source, which has been the most current version of the game since late 2004, has done well holding up that title. However, on August 12, 2011, Valve announced it's planned release for the next chapter in Counter-Strike's story, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.

Day of Defeat

The Day of Defeat division has reason to celebrate this month, as C-WHiT has recently been promoted to Division Leader. C-WhiT has been with eGO for many years now, and his promotion from Advisor to Division Leader will not come as a surprise to many.
In an interview shortly after his promotion was announced C-WHiT said he felt, ?Good. I hope to continue to serve the community in this capacity.? I asked C-WHiT why, in his opinion, eGO and DoD:S leadership decided to grant him the Division Leader position.

Operation eXperimental

Sometimes it's good to look back and reflect on the past. Old timers enjoy playing the old, "Do you remember when" game. Did you know that you can get a feel for how long people have been a part of EdgeGamers by asking questions like these: Do you remember when we had an Insurgency Division?, Do you remember when Insurgency embraced all of the other Half-Life 2 MODs and became the MOD Division?, Do you remember when the MOD Division decided to became a test platform for emerging first person shooters and became the FPS:X Division? FYI, the X is for eXperimental.

Strategy

JoshCash and the League of Legends players have been preparing for a 5x5 tournament. As such, I decided to try out the game for myself. This stepchild of Warcraft 3 and Scott Pilgrim has fun, fast action that is quite addicting. Did I mention that the game is FREE? Download it today, and get in on the action.

Team Fortress 2

Ever wondered what it would be like to run around on a giant three dimensional replication of the original Donkey Kong game? Maybe you are wondering what the heck Donkey Kong has to do with Team Fortress 2? Well that is exactly why you should attend Monday Madness.
Monday Madness is one of Spidey's (TF2 Advisor) favorite events because it is one of the only events where anything goes.

C-WHiT spent most of his days as a child playing his favorite game Tetris. In his prime he was a grand master. If you challenge him, you will lose miserably. Later on, C-WHiT traded in his joystick for a keyboard and a mouse and the rest is history.

Nowadays he likes to hang out behind buildings, grabbing flags, and beating people to death with a shovel. If that is not bad enough, he never leaves the base without his trusty side-kick and best friend, Greenlight Terror. Together they are DoD:S's Gruesome Twosome...its Dynamic Duo, and are the most destructive force in DoD:S.

In all seriousness, C-WHiT puts in a lot of hard work here at EdgeGamers. When not gaming, he's thinking of new ideas for events and loves to hear people's opinions about them. Do not be afraid to speak up if you have any suggestions. But when you do, please give him a pat on the back and congratulate him on being one of the best eGO has to offer.

How did the admins know what to do? They took a class, and their instructor was one of our Admin Trainers. The classes vary from division to division as do the trainers themselves. We are currently blessed with thirty-one volunteer instructors led by the unflappable USCG Hammer. They are well-versed in all of EdgeGamers' standards and procedures and are placed by their Division Leaders in their positions. These extraordinary individuals deserve your respect and gratitude, for they are the core of our admin policies.

The admin and advanced admin classes are usually taught in one of our servers and are available to members ranked eG and above. The instructor gathers all of the students in one place and explains how to handle the various situations that can come up and the commands available for the admins to use. The training is usually entertaining, but the students should keep the following in mind: The purpose of the class is to learn. Give your trainer your utmost attention and feel free to ask questions. Please do not distract the trainer or the rest of the class with rude behavior, and always say thank you. The trainers’ time and knowledge is a gift to you and their time is volunteered. Be worthy and make us proud.

The Battlefield Division hosted it's first Admin Round Table this month, which was a rousing success. At these gatherings, G’s and O’s discuss methods of admining and what to watch out for while in the server. The purpose of the Admin Round Tables is to encourage and motivate the admin community to strive to further improve our servers, while giving feedback about improvements that could be made. There is also an upcoming tournament, whose format is still being discussed by the Event Coordinators. For those wondering about the lack of events in the division, rest assured - more Event Coordinators (ECs) are being added to address this problem. With this in mind, please welcome Fl!p and Vertago to the EC team!

For those wondering about the switch over to Battlefield 3 that’s coming soon, the number of servers and type that will be added to accommodate BF3 will be based in part on the community’s interest in the game. In case you are still unsure about your own interest in the game, there is more information in this thread, lovingly provided by BC2’s own Advisor, Slazenger: One-Stop Everything You Need To Know About BF3

Now for your special service announcement from Slazenger: “In regards to the upcoming Battlefield 3 release, I would really like the community to step up their game in supporting it. This will depend on the number of pre-orders and interested members, thus Leadership will have the information they need to provide an adequate number of servers. Admin’s please take note; I need you in your absolute finest A-game for the release. When the game hits the shelves and the digital distribution racks I want to hit the ground sprinting.”

When Modern Warfare 2 was released, the game did not offer dedicated server support, and left many players frustrated. This also empowered cheaters since they could not be easily tracked. Many players, who were left disappointed with Modern Warfare 2 and were not excited by Black Ops, are turning to the classic version of the game, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. CoD4 is quickly becoming a cult-favorite and the CoD division is looking into bringing new servers online.

The release of Modern Warfare 3 is also expected to help bolster the CoD Division. The release is set for early November and our members are eagerly awaiting the launch. It has already been announced that the game will support dedicated servers. With this feature returning, and the anti-cheat improvements made in Black Ops, eGO admins will have an easier job of keeping the servers punk free. The specifics on server support have not yet been announced, so the adoption is not official, but the CoD division is optimistic.

CoD leadership would also like to mention "Roadhouse".

However, on August 12, 2011, Valve announced it's planned release for the next chapter in Counter-Strike's story, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO) will expand upon the team-based action gameplay that it; "pioneered when it was launched, twelve years ago". CS:GO will feature new maps, characters, and weapons, and will also feature some updated versions of classic Counter-Strike content, such as de_dust. CS:GO will also introduce new gameplay modes, quick matchmaking, leader boards and more. The announcement has already stirred up a lot of excitement and speculation, so let's wait and see if the new Counter-Strike will live up to its expectations.

In divisional Counter-Strike: Source news, the recruiting department has met and surpassed its goal of 200 recruits in the month of August. Their reward (or booby prize?): Division Leader Beta singing a song. With two days remaining, the recruiters are trailing closely behind their secondary goal of 250 recruits, which would allow us to hear The Judge's beautiful voice as well as witnessing Cryptex consuming a delicious mustereo.

Additionally, the Jail server rule book has been amended to add several new rules. The Zombie server is still running strong, so don't forget to join and play with your favorite flesh-eating fiends...errr friends.

New Division Leader

The Day of Defeat division has reason to celebrate this month, as C-WHiT has recently been promoted to Division Leader. C-WhiT has been with eGO for many years now, and his promotion from Advisor to Division Leader will not come as a surprise to many.

In an interview shortly after his promotion was announced C-WHiT said he felt, “Good. I hope to continue to serve the community in this capacity.” I asked C-WHiT why, in his opinion, eGO and DoD:S leadership decided to grant him the Division Leader position. He responded humbly, saying, “I was an active Advisor, serving the DoD:S Division by running events and performing various other duties around the division. DoD:S has some of the best Advisors and any of them would do well in this position.”

Everyone be sure to congratulate C-WHiT on this promotion and to spam his inbox.

Anzio

Anzio has recently moved to a more stable box. This means less lag and fewer server crashes. Be sure to visit the server and test it out. The new IP for Anzio 24/7 is 72.233.123.6:27015. More information on the relocation can be found here.

Point Reset

The DoD:S Division has been considering resetting its points system. Although it is still in discussion, it seems likely that this will happen. Check the DoD:S division discussion to view its recent poll on the topic and to provide your own feedback.

Gungame

The DOD:S Gungame has been very popular. Therefore, it will be undergoing a small but exciting change. Currently held every other Wednesday, starting in September, expect it to become a weekly event.

I would like to give a special thanks to C-WHiT and Greenlight Terror for their support and guidance with this article.

Sometimes it's good to look forward with anticipation. What is the next great game? What will EdgeGamers enjoy most? Wouldn't it be nice if we had a division dedicated to exploring a wider base of games? FPS, Role playing, Strategy, wherever whimsy takes us. Good news. Leadership thought so too. The First Person Shooter: eXperimental division is breaking away from its previous limitations and stepping up to the task with a will. Please join us in welcoming their new division leaders DigitalDJ and SgtBeavis as they redefine the FPS:X division as Operation: eXperimental.

Company of Heroes

Angreifen and other players have been working on getting the newest Strat game, Company of Heroes, off the ground. This game is more than just Starcraft with a World War 2 skin thrown on it. And guess what? It is free to play as well. The graphics are impressive, and the action can be intense. PvP games have been forming in both Ventrilo and STEAM. This game is definitely worth a try, and several eGO members are more than willing teach you the mechanics of the game (aka obliterate you on the battlefield).

Monday Madness is one of Spidey's (TF2 Advisor) favorite events because it is one of the only events where anything goes. Players can be frozen in place, they can spontaneously explode, or one second you can be running towards a sentry gun and the next you have been given the gift of flight. Sometimes while flying you will be given the gift of Hyperspam, allowing you to fire at an abnormally fast rate.

TF2 Leadership is proud to offer these totally unique events for our community. They love seeing new people attending and want to see more members like you having fun while playing this great game.

As a new member let me say this was very nice to read. It's a great way to see the community in action and involved. Though a few more pictures (maybe highlights from each division, pics of the leader or poster highlighted would be a nice touch.

Great newsletter everyone and good job, I think the images look great (although the tf2 one could include the logo, the background is a little random :P)

:)

Critic glasses on.
Reading the TF2 article I am incredibly disappointed, that's not news... that's an explanation of an event we have been running for years. The background on the image is confusing and makes little sense, as well as the fact the text logo looks like it had been made for minecraft with the font. Perhaps the font would have looked better with a cleaner background.
Looking at a lot of the other logos, they're not much better, though the operation X looks somewhat cleaner and better fashioned.

Thanks for the time put into this months newsletter everyone. Good read.

You can blame me euro. I asked that some of the reporters try finding one aspect of a divisions activity and go into greater detail, rather than the usual so and so got promoted, the servers standings, the number of recruits, etc. Since we can only publish once a month it is hard for the newsletter to be topical. We can strive for informative and entertaining.

I commend to your attention the news found on the EdgeGamers homepage as they strive to keep us informed of the latest events and have a much shorter response time.

Thank you for the feedback. I'm sorry you were disappointed.

After destroying your newsletter with "UP DOWN LEFT RIGHT e g o," I read it.
