Read an interesting Cnet.com article that Verizon users may like to know:

What it takes to keep your Verizon unlimited data

Dear Maggie,
I have been a Verizon customer for well over five years now. When the company announced it would no longer offer its unlimited data plans, I bought a smartphone for one of my sons, so that his usage would be unlimited. My other son was not interested in any of the smartphones Verizon offered at the time. We asked a Verizon Wireless representative in an instant message chat online if an unlimited data plan on his basic feature-phone would count for him being grandfathered in so that later he could get a smartphone and keep his unlimited data plan. The rep told us that he would in fact be grandfathered in when buying a smartphone. So I added unlimited data to his plan.

Last night I went to purchase him the Motorola Droid Bionic, the phone he wanted, and was told that he must switch to a tiered plan by a representative in the store. Now I have conflicting answers after the tiered plans are in place. I don't know how to resolve this. Can you offer some advice?

Thanks,
Denise

Dear Denise,
I have some bad news for you. I contacted Verizon Wireless to ask them about your situation. And Brenda Raney, the company's spokeswoman, confirmed that the rep you originally chatted with online was wrong.

She said that customers who have an unlimited data plan on a Verizon Wireless smartphone may keep their plan when purchasing another smartphone including the Motorola Droid Bionic. But customers who have an unlimited data plan on a Verizon Wireless basic phone (non-smartphone) and move to a smartphone will need to move to one of the new usage-based plans that begin at $30 for 2GB of data. That's the policy. She apologized for the customer service rep who offered the misinformation, but she offered no suggestions for making an exception.

If you saved the chat session in which the rep provided the wrong information, or you were able to get that rep's name and ID, you may be able to talk to a Verizon supervisor about making an exception. But from what Brenda Raney told me, it doesn't seem like they will budge.

On the bright side, unless your son is a very heavy data user, he will likely be fine with the 2GB data plan. That said, I know it must be frustrating for you since you had expected he would have the unlimited plan now and in the future. But to be honest, it's hard to say whether Verizon will continue to offer the unlimited plan to existing customers in the future. So in another year or two, it may not matter much that he didn't get grandfathered into the unlimited data plan.

That's good news to me, as I thought that I would have to get a tiered plan when I get a new smartphone to replace my current one.

Verizon was pretty clear about this when they announced the change to tiered data pricing. My wife's iPhone 4 has unlimited data, but I'd dropped my data on my Pre down to the 150MB plan because it's a crap phone and I quit using it for anything besides voice.

Hindsight sucks.

I've heard the same thing from a rep. I wanted to switch to a feature phone temporarily while I went camping, and they said on select feature phones I can swap it over to that and then swap it back to my smartphone later when I was done camping.

Smartphone plans and Feature Phone plans are not the same thing. They are two separate entities. Sure you can grandfather in the Feature phone plan, but it wont do you any good on your smartphone.

Stupid people are stupid, failure to read what you are signing.

Guess its good I just got a contract with verizon a couple months ago for two smart phones, at least I don't have much to worry about, just yet.

It's been about 6 weeks since this post. Has anyone gone into Verizon in the past week to see if the grandfather option is still available?

I got the new Droid Razr phone on Sunday 11/20/11, and I had a good chat with the Verizon manager as he was getting my new phone setup. He wasn't allowed to say, but I got a strong impression the grandfather option is set to expire either after Thanksgiving, or by the end of this month. If it hasn't expired yet, then an FYI, I went from an HTC Eris to the Razr, and I not only kept my unlimited data plan, but I was also upgraded to 4G access without any additional charges. So this next bill in December, I should hypothetically have exactly the same monthly bill as I did the past 2 years.

4G and 3G are the same plan

with verizon it is just a "data plan" if you phone happens to support LTE bands, then cool, you can use it.

Theoretically it will cost them less to deliver 4G since the Cells them selves are more efficient, however initial infrastructure costs are probably still putting them in the negative.

I never plan to move from verizon as long as i can grandfather this unlimited plan. the second they remove it, i am jumping ship to whoever can give me the least limited plan. I use like 6+GB a month, sometimes over 10, i cannot afford to pay for that kind of crap on ATT or Verizon.

It seems like they to rip people off right now I'm in a contract with at&t its gonna end like 4weeks I was planing to get metro pcs because there pretty cheap but I really enjoy my blackberry and I recently got a galaxy S and I hate that the battety will day in a few hours then my black berry will go for like 4days

I plan on getting the Galaxy Nexus on Verizon when I am up for an upgrade (New every 2) and I really hope they let me keep my unlimited data from my Droid Incredible as I use a lot of data on my phone. I really hate tiered plans...:cursing:
