this includes price as a factor. so whats the best GPU atm?

as you can see i have a 5850. i would just get another 5850 and crossfire, if i could, but i can't seem to find any place where i can get one. everything is 6800s now, which are not compatible together either so im almost forced to get a new GPU.

i want to max out most recent games, and this is going to include skyrim when its released. yes a lot of gpus can do that, i understand, but basically what im looking for is an upgrade to my current card, even if its not by too too much, and eventually...hopefully by the end of the year, i can sli or crossfire them.

don't worry about bottlenecks because there will be other slight upgrades, but i will be running an AMD CPU.

this thread isn't about ATI vs nvidia either. honestly i prefer ATI but right now i'll most likely get nvidia, something like a 570 possibly. hard to say. i've been out of the game for a little while so im behind on the most current info and stats, so what do you guys think is basically the best gpu for the money at the moment?
what are cards i should look at, and ones i should avoid because they are just more expensive slightly OCd versions etc stuff like that.

any info would be appreciated

Either 6950 or 560 Ti are usually considered the price / performance sweet spot right now.

yea 6950. if you have the money i would say 6970 but the 560ti and the 6950 are the best for the buck

best gpu atm is the gtx 580 for 1920*1080 resolution and smaller...and the 6950(then unlocked to 6970) for higher resolutions and for multi-monitor setups due to the 2gb vram you can basically get 2 of these for the price of 1 gtx 580...now the gtx 580 has a 3gb vram card out now but nvidia is still very expensive price/performance wise

The 3gb version you're talking about is the 580x2 correct? If so, its two 580s on one card

no the gtx 580 3gb versions is a single gpu...your talking about the gtx 590...thats a dual gpu on 1 card

Including price, take reflex's advice and run with whichever is cheaper. Straight up best performance is 580, or 6990 if you only count single card and not single GPU.

Nope, they have in fact released a 3GB version of the 580. Though frankly, it doesn't make a lick of difference.

If you decide on the 570/580 I suggest a better cooling solution then Reference. The 570/580 run very hot. To the point of failure. Individual testing of numerous organizations have reached the same verdict, unless a superior cooler is used, failure may occur.

not to sound like a douche, but

proof?

plenty of pages to sort through.. some is out right hardware failure, some is over temp issues, some is software related, but all are issues associated with the GTX 580.

Hardly any of those relate to them "run[ing] very hot. To the point of failure" Infact, many of them are just forum users whining about artifacts, or other random errors.

I really don't see the point you are trying to make with that google search.

Hell, i could google the same thing with a 5870, and you could believe it was a bad card:

If you had linked a bunch of reviews showing that the cooler was ineffective, or something, then maybe you would have a case.

The reality is that the redesigned vapor chamber-based cooler was one of the main features of the 580, and part of the reason that it is so well received. It runs cooler than GTX 480, uses less power than GTX 480.

Here is just one example, but the sentiment is echoed throughout almost every review:

The thing maxed out at 86c. This is no where near "run[ing] very hot. To the point of failure"

I cant find the videos I am referencing.. I will try to track them down.. but all show the GTX 580 failing under OC. It is a chance that it is just an issue with 1 companys cards, I did not pay attention to the manufacturer/s.

maybe you should have pointed that out before you generalized by stating that all (reference) 580s "run very hot. To the point of failure"

EVGA has a gt 520 for 60 bucks, big bang for little price among the video cards gets my vote...:)

Don't get a GT 520. That's a card only for those who don't want to game, or has no clue how bad a GPU it is. 64-bit memory bus? Really? For $40 more (or almost twice the price), you can get roughly 5x the performance with a GTS 450 card.

That's not big ban for little price. That's paying good money for crappy gaming cards.

Reflex got it right the first time; Best GPU is the 6950 or 560 Ti. Best bang for the buck cards.

According to bit tech's custom pc magazine, the best gpu setup you can buy is a single 6970 as the 6990 and crossfire creates microstuttering as does SLI. As a single card the 580 does not even stand up to the 6970's it's eyefinity ability.
I would recommend getting it.

Are you talking about the 570s that caught fire because of bad voltage regulation in the BIOS?

Maybe it was this?

- Description: IMPORTANT: The supplied Geforce Drivers 267.52 for Geforce GTX 590 will not stop the card from overheating when overclocking. Please use newer versions from the Nvidia website and stay away from 267.52. Otherwise this may happen ...

Correction:

Single GTX 580

-or-

Dual HD 6970's

The 6970's scale better in crossfire, but the GTX 580 is faster as a single card.

And it was the GTX 590 where the voltage regulation went up in smoke. The GTX 580/570 have no such problems and are very good cards.
