Hey all,

I'm back, at least in posting form. I've talked with a few people on vent, and seen a few posts in various forums, and I thought I'd post about this.

Many of us are of the age where we are in school. Personally, I am in college, and I've heard some people talk about how they're gonna finish homework as fast as possible to get back to the game, or that they are skipping homework for the game. Or even that they wish school didn't happen so they could keep gaming.

Well, I wanted to give you guys a piece of advice against this. I am currently 23 years old, attending what is my 6th year of college. I have had numerous financial and life setbacks that I won't get into, but let's get real about one thing, I didn't get the job done, and I put other things in life (including video games) ahead of finishing my schooling and getting my degree during college. Due to my poor decisions in not caring about school, and deciding to play video games, or goin to parties and the bars, or whatever you would think of, I have forced myself to be in school for 2 more years than I should have.

I don't say this to have a "woe is me" thread, but simply to explain this to you younger people in school. I am now currently $18,000 more in debt as a result of this than I would have been if I had graduated. If you add to that fact that I would have gotten a job in my career where I was making at least $35,000 a year (average salary across America) versus the roughly $7,000 I make working my part time job while attending school, I've also lost about $56,000 in these last two years of school from difference in earnings. If you add that to the total debt added to my school loans, that means i lost about $74,000 in total during these two years.

This is pathetic, and feel free to call me pathetic for this, because I now see the folly of my ways during my earlier years of college.

Please, please.... PLEASE focus on school. Please finish strong. Please understand that simply HAVING an education increases the jobs of getting the better paying jobs in life. PLEASE seek help with school from tutors and/or friends if you're struggling. PLEASE seek financial help from family members and friends if you're in a serious bind. PLEASE don't think you're the only one struggling through high school or college, because you're not. Please never give up. And most importantly...

PLEASE GRADUATE.

well written Gandalf. I personally chose not to go into school and i hated highschool but now that I am in an apprenticeship which includes some schooling i apply myself and see the value of putting it first. I am 24 and can very much agree that putting other things towards whatever your doing (i.e work, school, goals) can be detrimental to your future. I would not say you were pathetic cause you learned from it and that is the most important lesson any of us can learn as we move through life and its challenges. I wish you luck in your career and completion of school and I would go as far as to say we support you as a community that acts as family!

Yeah, I've heard this many times as well, I've even done it but I realize that school needs to come first. Not only for all of the reasons you listed above but also it will just increase your stress if you put it off till last minute.

See, i am set in my carrier, i am married, and have 2 beautiful kids, Before i even started with video games, You will have time after you set up your life to play some games, So like he said STAY IN SCHOOL. And as some of you heard on vent i tell people to go do their homework.....

I believe, that if you want something in life that you gotta work hard for it...but even though if you think its to late, or that you made a mistake in your life, its still never 2 late.

You learn from those mistakes and you try to better yourself.

Gandalf is absolutely right. I was in College when Call of Duty 4 came out, and at the time the game was so amazing, that me and a buddy constantly skipped our College classes to just chill at my house and play COD4 all day.

Terrible mistake! We both bombed that semester and got kicked outta school, so we ended up transferring.

Focus on school kids! I wasted thousands of dollars just so I can play a game. New, Better games come out every year. Finish school as quickly as you can so you can get a good job so you can buy all the games you want

I'm kind of in this predicament myself, except I'm on my 2nd year. We all just need to really learn how to manage time better so we can do both, and have self control.

As long as you keep growing and learning you are anything but pathetic.

School does need to come first. When I was in college there was a reason that Halo night was only one night a week.

Find some time for gaming, but not at the cost of school or work. Money isn't everything, but it is necessary.
