I've seen people make the same mistakes with vehicles and class roles all the time without ever learning, so I figured I'd make a guide starting with roles.

Classes
Note: All class roles can change dramatically when using a multiclass weapon such as the shotgun.

Assault

  • To provide medium to medium-long range Anti-Infantry support
  • To revive teammates
  • To support and deter pushes through the use of Smoke Grenades.
  • Minor Anti-Vehicle support through the use of M320 Frags
  • To keep teammates alive through the use of Med Packs

Tips

  1. Just because you're using the grenade launcher doesn't mean you're a lone wolf. Use the m320 to flush out rooms that are *just* too far away for a grenade to do the job.
  2. When using the smoke launcher offensively, try to place the smoke at a midpoint between you're teammates and the enemy, this will either leave them defenseless as you move up or force them to advance from cover.
  3. When using the smoke launcher defensively, place your smoke right on top of the enemy, this keeps them from advancing. Because if they do they're running blind and straight into you.
  4. The M320 can be quite useful against low-flying helicopters and buggies. Use this to your advantage.
  5. Destroying buildings non-essential to defense can help extremely in Rush mode.
  6. If your enemy is behind cover, look for something destructible above them. Then pull off some instant-renovation!
  7. Teammates can only be revived once, it appears. So keep them alive!
  8. Always scan the map for downed teammates and teammates requesting health. The symbols for these are a skull and a medic cross respectively.

Engineer

  • To provide major anti-vehicle support at nearly any range.
  • To provide vehicle maintenance service.
  • Short to Short-Medium range anti-infantry support
  • Covertly arming/disarming M-COMs, Covertly disabling vehicles, Covert spotting and killing. All with the EOD Bot.
  • Building destruction.

Tips

  1. Standing at deployment using the stinger didn't get you much in the beta, and it gets you even less in the full game. Countermeasures are 1st level unlock these days, so wait for the right moment to use the stinger.
  2. Optimal times to use the Stinger/Jav; keep the lock until one of these things happen.
    Vehicles flying opposite your direction
    Vehicles attempting to kill infantry
Vehicles that have recently deployed flares
  3. Don't knock the RPG/SMAW. Its very useful against vehicles at any range once you judge distances correctly. It works best from long, straight ranges such as roads and allys. This is because Tanks have a slimmer POV in order to aim accurately, and a very wide POV in chase cam; so wide in fact that players seem small.
  4. Try to follow friendly tanks on foot, and always stay opposite the business end of the cannon. This keeps you out of enemy retaliation and keeps you from being noticed.
  5. When repairing a vehicle it is priority to make sure you're unnoticed, or you will be targeted immediately.
  6. Try to avoid using the EOD bot near infantry. Go through nooks and crannies that you'd only usually be able to fit through when prone. This will allow you to sabotage attackers and slow defenses.
  7. If your enemy is behind cover, look for something destructible above them. Then pull off some instant-renovation!
  8. Destroying buildings non-essential to defense can help extremely in Rush mode.
  9. When riding shotgun in a vehicle, you can use your repair tool to fix choppers and jeeps on the move; however, this won't give you repair points.

Support

  • High anti-infantry support.
  • Suppression
  • Anti-vehicle defense
  • Short range anti-vehicle offense.
  • Resupplying ammo.
  • Long range anti-infantry
  • Long Range Anti-Tank

Tips
  1. Just because you have a bipod doesn't mean you're dead on accurate, it also doesn't mean you have unlimited ammo. Use burst fire. As an additional tip, your bursts should last no longer than it takes for you to say "Monkey Bars".
  2. Always scan your map for the "Require Ammo" symbol. It looks like 3 bullets in a square, and spam ammo all over the place. Not only does this help the team, it gives you points too.
  3. C4 can be useful as a sneaky way of taking out a tank. Just make sure that theres a lot of places to hide in between you and the tank, otherwise the machine gunner will take you out before you get a chance to plant it.
  4. 2 sticks of c4 is required to destroy a tank, but you only need 1 to disable it.
  5. C4 can be used as a grenade if applied correctly. If you're being chased up the stairs throw one down and hit the deck!
  6. C4 blast radius is much higher than grenades, and does much more damage. Handle with care.
  7. The mortar requires working with your team and using situational awareness to get kills. Beware however, you're always spotted when you use it!
  8. The mortars don't seem to have an arch, and just magically drop out of the sky above your target <_<
  9. If machine guns aren't your thing, feel free to use sub-machine guns or shotguns!
  10. The mortar doesn't always have pinpoint accuracy!
  11. Mortars do not show hit markers.

Recon

  • Spotting enemies and vehicles
  • Laser-designating vehicles with the SOFLAM; this makes all auto-lock weapons lock instantly with whatever you're aiming at.
  • Using mobile spawns to drive pushes onto the point and get behind enemy lines.
  • Long Range Sniper Support
  • Area denial
  • Area designation support (motion tracker)

Tips

  1. You don't need a Ballistic 12x to snipe at 200 yards. Most "sniping" in this game is better suited for the ACOG, with the largest maps Caspian Border and Firestorm being an exception.
  2. Any scope power below 7x doesn't give off glint.
  3. Use spotting as if you're making an explosion on the person you're spotting. Anyone caught in your scope will be instantly spotted in an area-of-effect style. This includes crowds of infantry AND vehicles.
  4. The higher the scope zoom, the less range-dashes you have to aim with. With the ballistic 12 you RARELY have to use the 2nd bar to get a shot. The longest range you'd ever need to aim at is somewhere in between the 2nd and 3rd bars on the 12x, and this is for 500-600 meter shots.
  5. When using the sniper, try to avoid all close range engagements. You may be able to take out one guy, but you may be attracting attention you can't handle!
  6. If the map you're on is mostly close range, use sub-machine or shotguns. If its mostly medium range (70-15 yard ranges) use an ACOG on a semi-auto sniper.
  7. The UAV isn't susceptible to the same rules helicopters are, feel free to fly through trees and low, past objects, and through buildings.
  8. Your main role is team support, not getting kills.

Vehicles
NEVER leave without passengers

Main Battle Tank

  • Medium to long range anti-vehicle support.
  • Medium Range anit-infantry support
  • Indirect infantry support

Tips

  1. NEVER STOP MOVING. I can't prioritize this enough. As a tanker you're always the main target, so keep that pinky over the boost button and those fingers on the accelerator. The only time you should ever stop moving is to line up a long range shot from behind friendly lines.
  2. NEVER leave without a gunner, and if there's nobody where you pick up the tank either have someone in your squad spawn on you or drive to a friendly spawn to pick someone up.
  3. Retreat to recover armor. Just because you're a tank doesn't mean you're invincible. Once you drop below %80, throw it in reverse and recover; because if you hit %55 you'll be disabled, and a sitting duck.
  4. If you can help it always try to have an engineer as your gunner, and make sure he follows rules number 4 and 5 of the engineer guide.
  5. IR Smoke can also work quite well as cover for your infantry pals. Its nearly twice as voluminous as the smoke grenade!
  6. When engaging an enemy tank at medium range, rule number 1 should always be followed. Your finger should be on boost the whole time. Don't worry if you can't take him out, as long as you've rattled him while taking minimum damage you're doing it right.
  7. AA or AG missiles are not an exception to rule number 1.
  8. Use proximity scan when crossing tight-hidey areas. This prevents anti-vehicle classes from getting the drop on you.
  9. MBTs can safely cross player-deep rivers without disabling, however, they are not amphibious.
  10. Trees and fences will crumble beneath you with the help of the boost button.
  11. Use destruction to your advantage! The MBT main gun is excellent at destroying structures as well!.

Mobile Anti-Air
Stationary AA is more or less the same except it can't move.

  • Anti-Air
  • Minor anti-vehicle

Tips

  1. Stay away from the frontlines! Your main gun is incredibly ineffective against infantry, and you have no secondary gunner to keep you from being surrounded. Keep to the fields in between points.
  2. Target choppers first! They can take you out quicker than anything in the game!
  3. You have to lead and aim up in most situations. The only exception would be targets within 200 meteres.
  4. You're not as effective against tanks as you might think. A full belt doesn't even disable it (it does around 30-40 damage). However, if an enemy tank is already under fire you may be able to disable it.
  5. You're extremely effective against light vehicles!

Troop Quick Transport (Humvee, Vodnik, and buggies)

  • Low profile troop transport
  • Infantry support
  • Anti-infantry

Tips
  1. With the these, crashing into objects can damage you pretty decently, and crashing into them headlong can sometimes disable you completely! Be wary of obstacles.
  2. When traveling at full speed, hit the reverse button plus the direction you want to turn to execute a sliding turn, its much quicker.
  3. You're not an IFV, both the hum/vod and Humvee are the most brittle vehicles in the game. Be quick and covert. Stay on the outskirts of the map if you can.
  4. Sometimes enemies won't even notice you drive behind them.
  5. Completely avoid tanks, they are instant death even if they don't use the main gun.
  6. As a buggy driver, your passengers can and will be taken out separately, so keep an eye on the chase cam and adjust accordingly.
  7. Try to stop when you're facing the backs of enemies so your gunner can chew them apart, but not for TOO long.
  8. Bullets are much more of a threat in Buggies than they are in Humvees, KEEP MOVING.

Amphibious Assault Vehicle/Armored Personnel Carrier

  • Troop transport
  • Troop support
  • Anti-infantry
  • Mobile spawn point

Tips

  1. Attempt to keep moving. This isn't as drastic of a rule as the main battle tank simply because the AAV has a slimmer profile and is less likely to be attacked by anti-vehicle classes, especially when supported by an MBT.
  2. The main gun appears to shoot a type of grenade, therefore its not hitscan, so you must lead your shots at most ranges and account for arch.
  3. Bullets can't penetrate you. Use you're broad side as temporary cover to assist troops in moving forward. However, don't stay still for more than 8 seconds. You might attract the wrong kind of attention.
  4. The AAV is completely amphibious, meaning it can drive on water much like the boats can, though slower.
  5. The more soldiers within, the better. Each seat in the AAV has a mounted light machine gun.
  6. Use the boost button when moving through small areas.

Transport and Scout Choppers
Let me start by saying that these are the only air vehicles I find easy to operate without a flight stick. Mainly because you don't have to do any attacking as the pilot
  • Speedy troop support
  • Alternative push support
  • Anti-Infantry

Tips

  1. To avoid anti-air missiles, dump your rotor speed and drop in a backwards motion. Stingers like to track you from behind and get confused when an aircraft moves towards them and more often then not overshoot you.
  2. When being transport, run a line straight over the enemy points so that passengers can drop out over them.
  3. Use sweeps to assist your side gunners, by sweep I mean dip your nose drastically and lean back up to level so that they can get clear shots.
  4. Keep moving! Nothing is more embarrassing than getting shot out of the sky by an M320!
  5. Fly high, and drop to low. This is the least dangerous area for you to be in.
  6. Avoid anti-air missiles at all cost. Even if they don't disable you they will always kill a passenger.
  7. Never get within 15 feet of enemy ground.

Jets

  • Air to Air support
  • Light Anti Vehicle support after early unlocks
  • Heavy Anti-Vehicle support at late unlocks

Tips

  1. Get yourself a joystick. You can't get the precision out of mouse and keys that you can from a joystick (ironic, eh?)
  2. After launching your flares, hide behind a mountain or up high if you have stealth to recharge.
  3. To turn fast. Lower the throttle to begin the turn, and full throttle using afterburner exiting the turn. You can turn even faster by "pumping" the throttle.
  4. Support other friendly jets, keep other jets off their back.
  5. Make sure that if you're using rocket pods that your fellow pilot has heat seekers. Or you'll be a sitting duck in dogfights.
  6. Sweeping infantry and tanks with your machine guns isn't worth the effort. At most you'll deal 20 damage to a tank.
  7. Under The Radar does not apply to Stingers

A10 Thunderbolt/Frogfoot

  • Anti-Vehicle Support
  • Anti-Infantry Support
  • Anti-Air Support

Tips

  1. Don't devote to a dive if it endangers you.
  2. Use your in-cockpit altitude meter to get up to 700 and try to stay up there at the start of your run.
  3. Dump your speed in the duration of your attacking dive. You are able to move slower than the jets while still being airbourne.
  4. Turning rules for the jets also apply to the A10/Frogfoot
  5. Avoid enemy A10/Frogfoots. Successfully engaging them takes a long time and gaining their attention is counter productive most of the time. Only engage them if you can take them in a single pass.
  6. Under The Radar does not apply to Stingers

Attack Choppers

  • Anti-Vehicle Support
  • Anti-Infantry support

  1. Under The Radar is the most useful perk for these, since you're extremely vulnerable to jets.
  2. To increase speed, dip your nose and let go of the throttle, then increase the throttle again.
  3. Don't devote so much to dive bombing, or you'll wined up in a tree.

Pretty good start, Rukus!

Now, if I could only get half my squad members to memorize these rules and follow them...

My one slight addition, as borrowed from Penny Arcade: "Here’s what I do care about: people are still, in 2011, driving a troop transport out of the base without actually transporting any troops."

You forgot: Mortars don't always hit directly on target, and don't show hitmarkers. Also you forgot mobile AA, my favorite ground based vehicle. I got heat seekers, IR smoke, tons of stuff :D

Adding those as we speak, also buggies and humvees. It was late when I wrote this.

NOTE

I don't think that any map I've played has featured an IFV yet. They may be Rush only, a mode that I've shown neglect lately. So the IFV guide has been converted to be named correctly, and is now the AAV guide.

Nice guide, except I think if you're in a vehicle, there should be some kind of communication. I hate not knowing where the driver is going or where the gunner(s) what to go. So I usually just try to run over people....it's so much fun

Pretty hard to keep moving and type at the same time....
