Need help - new to BF3

So I was told in no uncertain terms to stop complaining about the VOIP, and to just get Ventrilo like everyone else, so I got it.
So, assuming I am willing to run 5 applications at the same time (Origin, chrome, BF3, BF3's voice system in case my 2 friends can join my Party, and now Vent), how does this help me communicate with my squad?

I can only join the 32 Player Rush eGO server. My system lags crazy bad if there's more than 32 players.
I see a bunch of Rooms there, but how do I know who is in what server, on what team, and in what squad?

Are we using Ventrilo tactically or just for chatting?

I'll try to break it up:

1) Origin has to be run (unfortunately) not much you can do about that, and it is a common complaint amongst BF3 gamers.

2) Chrome shouldn't eat up to much memory, but if it does I do recommend Alt+Tab and closing the browser once the game is launched.

3) BF3's voice system is tied into chrome, so in actuality they go hand in hand. I'd advise to ignore the (2) if you want / need to use BF3's invoice command system.

4) When in ventrilo, we do have multiple rooms. We have game chat, random chat, and some of both. We are quite friendly in all the above. If you do enter a room, just throw out a shout (What server you guys in) probably the most common question. You can also try Joining a vent channel and than join on them through battlelog

5) I'd recommend starting on everything low settings. See how it plays, than move up in a step system. It is a painful process, but it will produce the best results. Also check out this link and see if your current settings add up:

In all you will have 4 programs running at once:
Origin, Browser, Ventrillo, BF3

Origin and Ventrillo do not eat up much memory and should not have much baring on your lag issues in the game. Browser can cause a lot of memory problems especially for Firefox. I still doubt that is the issue. My best guess is that your video settings do not meet the requirements or they are set to high. You can adjust these settings once you are in a game (I recommend joining an empty server and adjusting them)

One thing I didn't realize is that my processor is slightly below minimum specs. 2.4 instead of 2.7 ghz AMD, so that will need to be remedied and I hope it's the cause of some sound issues I get from time to time.
For now I can stick to the smaller servers and try to enjoy myself when it's not lagging.

I may try Vent. but I am having such a hard time in the game overall, even when it's running well, that I may wait. I am getting the jump on people all the time (shooting first) and trying to play properly and conservatively - but I just get wasted time and again. Usually from behind, but also from someone playing like it was CS, running across the street with wild abandon, being shot by me, but still killing me every time.
If the game supported spectating I would invite you to see and tell me if I am doing something wrong. I just don't see how anyone can get a positive K/D ratio or thousands of points in a round in this game.

Oh I have all my settings on Low now. It really didn't do much visual damage to the game. I kind of wish it had to make it run better.
I have a GTX 260 and 4GB ram.

My recommendation would basically be to just try ventrilo and see what happens. I've never had it slow down my games at all, whether it be BF3, DoD:S, WoW, Warhammer Online, etc. They did a pretty good job of optimizing it to reduce the resource usage so that you're able to run it in the background. Also, if money is not an issue for you, try to upgrade your system just a wee bit to match the minimum specs even, it shouldn't cost you too much to do that as you can buy some pretty inexpensive stuff nowadays. Your video card should be alright. I have a GeForce GTX 275 with a 3.40 GHZ AMD Quad. The Ram should also be alright too, but you certainly may want to think about upgrading soon.

I added you to origin, you should hit me up. We can probably join an empty server, I strongly encourage you dropping all settings to low. See if that has any impact on your lag issues.

I had the same problem when I beta tested BC2 and had to upgrade my whole rig.

Thanks guys.
I got Vent set up but nobody was talking, even in the separate BF rooms. This happened over a few nights.
This game has fizzled out for me. I'm the kind of player who needs teamwork and coordinated efforts to have fun. Otherwise it's spawn, die, repeat... wait forever for next map to load, repeat again. Teamwork is simply not built into this game as much as it was in 2142 or BF2.
I may play again, but I certainly am not going to grind away on it to horde my precious unlock points. I have everything set to low and stick to 32-players or less, and it runs OK I guess.
