O.O I like how both the above images are with the USA flag, other countries did fight too! :P

But seriously, this is a very important day, a day to remember people who fought and lost their lives. For our freedom.

Well Darth, Veterans Day is to America.
Then, Europe views it as Armistice Day.
It's really the same thing, but is named differently in different places.
It is still celebrated the same though.
A thanks goes out to those who serve!

Thank you to all the Veterans around the world and those within the eGO community!!

*bowed head in silence at the 11th minute of the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of the 11th year* thanks for your services in the military and we're gathered here to respect those who fought for our countries.

I type this post not to say thank you for this one day as I give thanks everyday to those who have served. There will always be a place inside me for those who have given thier lives, are MIA or POW.

But I write it to remind all that this holiday above most is not just a free day off of work, from school, or one to be taken lightly. But to please take a moment and think truly of the sacrifice of all men and women of any armed forces. This day is but a moment for thought of that sacrifice.

We will never forget!

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

-Lieutenant Colonel John Alexander McCrae

My Uncle's graduation in USAF and it got national national anthem

The Star Spangled Banner
In 1814, Francis Scott Key wrote the poem, Defense of Fort McHenry. The poem was later put to the tune of (John Stafford Smith's song) The Anacreontic Song, modified somewhat, and retitled The Star Spangled Banner. Congress proclaimed The Star Spangled Banner the U.S. National Anthem in 1931.

Oh, say, can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hail'd at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thro' the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watch'd, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof thro' the night that our flag was still there.
O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

On the shore dimly seen thro' the mists of the deep,
Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,
In full glory reflected, now shines on the stream:
'Tis the star-spangled banner: O, long may it wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion
A home and a country should leave us no more?
Their blood has wash'd out their foul footsteps' pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave:
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

O, thus be it ever when freemen shall stand,
Between their lov'd homes and the war's desolation;
Blest with vict'ry and peace, may the heav'n-rescued land
Praise the Pow'r that hath made and preserv'd us a nation!
Then conquer we must, when our cause is just,
And this be our motto: "In God is our trust"
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

It was August 14, 1944. 250 B-24 bombers along with B-17's and fighter support commenced Operation Tidal Wave. One of the largest Air Force missions ever. This was the second time in 12 months they had tried to cut off Hitler's fuel supply by bombing oil facilities near Ploesti, Romania. Right after dropping his payload, my grandfather's B-24 was shot bad with AA guns. One engine was on fire, the pilot made it to the Adriatic Sea, climbed as high as he could and said, lets bail. All 7 crew members bailed out, opened their chutes and safely landed in the ocean. They were rescued soon after. No one knew of this story until he passed away. Unfortunately I never met him, he died of lung cancer right before I was born. But I sure am thankful to him and other granddad, dad, mom, brother, sister etc like him, who selflessly put his life on the line for me, even though I wasn't born yet. He was thinking of me.

might be a lil' bit too late now since it is already 14.54 12/11/2011 here.
but still. Happy Veterans Day.
:D
