EA President Confirms There Will Be a Battlefield 4

EA president Frank Gibeau has indicated that Battlefield 4 is already on the publisher's schedule.

EA's Battlefield 3 has only been on the market for a little over two weeks and the publisher is already talking about the fourth Battlefield installment. Heck, the first DLC isn't even available and the publisher already has its dollar-sign sights set on an unannounced Battlefield 4.

According to Eurogamer, EA president Frank Gibeau confirmed the fourth installment during a keynote presentation at the University of California. The revelation isn't shocking to say the least given that Battlefield 3 has already sold five million copies since its release. But his comment was tweeted by keynote attendees nonetheless.

"There is going to be a Battlefield 4," he said.

Of course, an EA spokesperson performed a little PR cleanup immediately after the news escaped Twitter, saying that "Frank was speaking broadly about the Battlefield brand - a brand that EA is deeply passionate about and a fan community that EA is committed to."

Weeks ago just before the launch of Battlefield 3, Swedish developer DICE said that it hoped to develop the fourth installment sometime in the near future. "This feels like day one now," executive producer Patrick Bach said. "It's exciting. The whole Frostbite 2 thing has opened up a big landscape ahead of us so we can do whatever we want."

DICE claims that the new Frostbite 2 engine was designed to "future proof" the studio: meaning that the engine will even work on the next Xbox and PlayStation console thanks to its PC-based roots. "We know everything about multi-threading now," Bach added. "We know everything about multi-graphics card solutions now. If someone built a console where the specs are that or more, we have the technology to do something. We could port the game to that console tomorrow."

Does that mean we might see Battlefield 4 as a launch title for Xbox Next/720/Loop in 2013? Even more, will gamers be able to save the game on one Microsoft platform and resume on another (Microsoft platform)? Now that would be cool.

Of course he does. I fully expect EA to pull an Activision and run this franchise into the ground as fast as they can while they milk it for all its worth.

To soon, Here comes Battlefield 4, The next game that will fail with the developers only caring for money. (Cough Cough, MW3.)

I see the rotation way more feasible than what Activision does with its two year cycles: Battlefield 3 this year, Medal of Honor 2 next year, Bad Company 3 (or a replacement like Battlefield 3142) in 2013, then Battlefield 4 in 2014. At least that way, there is a 3 year development cycle and the next generation of consoles and PC hardware would kick off with a new Battlefield game to show off the extent that the technology can go with BF as the leading example. Of course, for Medal of Honor 2, they will announce it at next year's E3 and release it next Fall to compete with the next Call of Duty.

That's what I expect, anyway.

Probably in 2013 (like Winter 2013)

I hope they focus on WW2 again, a BF1942 remake with Frostbite 3.0 (by that time) would be great IMO

If they prop up the modding community as well as they did 1942 and hire people on (the ones who made the Desert Combat mod for 1942 went on to make BF2), then perhaps we will see way more exciting proposals.

They need to switch it up and go back to ww2 or something, cause eventually modern combat is gonna get old. Maybe they could expand on the bfbc2 vietnam and make a whole game centralized around it. btw ik there was already bf:vietnam but it was a long time ago

the modding scene is kinda dead, the best mods these days are graphical mods...stuff for Crysis and the recent GTA ENB series comes to mind.

Good gameplay mods are a thing of the past. But damn, Desert Combat was great, probably the best mod ever!

I want to see Battlefield 3142. With Frostbite, it'd be godlike.

I don't see anything wrong with modern combat. It just needs reinventing. For Battlefield, though, they don't need to do a whole lot because it's been fun. Just maps with more impact. I think Karkand will help that. The problem with going back to WW2 is that you go back to a smaller weapon count and vehicle selection. It's difficult to argue that these games are good, but the systems that power them (like the XP upgrades) need refreshing. But the mod scene is definitely not dead - it just needs more of DICE's support. AIX was a great mod for BF2. Just think what it would be like to have a mod where everyone spawns with a helicopter or a jet!
