New Patch Locks Skyrim to Steam Forever - No LAA Mods Allowed

New Patch Locks Skyrim to Steam Forever and Ever

A new patch released on Steam binds Bethesda's The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim to Valve's service, preventing third-party mods.

When id Software released the first patch for RAGE on the PC, it seemed to calm the natives furious over several launch issues. Bethesda, on the other hand, launched its first update for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim for the PC and apparently created even more problems than before. In fact, it has reportedly locked the game's executable to Valve's Steam service forever and ever, preventing the just-released RPG from running on its own.

But that's not the only issue. Gamers are complaining that the new 18 MB patch has broken the unofficial "large address aware" third-party patch that allowed Bethesda's RPG to use more memory than 2 GB, support more modifications, and reportedly resolved crashing issues and texture corruption problems. However a new LAA workaround has been released that does the same thing without altering Skyrim's now-modified executable.

"Activating this made the game more stable, and meant it could support more mods and tweaks ? including the fabled uGrids .ini file tinker that made the game?s icy landscapes look significantly more gorgeous," RPS reports. "Once Steam auto-updates Skyrim, that opportunity is dead. And we once again have a game that, for many of us, ignores most of our PCs? memory. What a waste."

In related Skyrim news, one gamer located in Finland has discovered that the entire virtual world of Tamriel includes the landmasses from Morrowind and Oblivion. They were discovered after the player discovered a closed path at the archway of Stendarr's Beacon, the closest point to Morrowind. Curious, he used the noclip command to move past the invisible wall. The trail continued on for a bit until it thinned out with scaled down textures.

"Bethesda has made the landmass for Morrowind," he writes in a blog. "The entirety of Morrowind. Solstheim is there, the mainland is there, Vvardenfell is there. It?s all there. It?s scaled down slightly however, since the scaling in Morrowind, Skyrim, And Oblivion are all obscured towards each other. But it?s still very large."

Err, I think this is heading to "the current LAA patch is now broken" (there is a workaround up already), not "bethesda just said no you can't mod a TES game and no you won't get the Creation Kit", since the latter would quite literally be the death blow of Bethesda.

Yeah hope we're not getting the full story because TES games have always thrived with how the mod community comes alive, it's what makes the game a better purchase on the PC then on console. I mean I'm enjoying it on xbox but I know I will never be able to enjoy it the way a PC player would.

I swear, game companies these days..... they ruin it for the mass.

Bit of a sensationalist title there, don't you think? It broke one mod, it has been fixed.

The post in the thread has the correct title, I can't edit a Thread Title on the outside.

And the story was more about it being stuck on Steam, not the modding. Since the original story was posted, there has been a new mod update that works around the patch. I'd be surprised if there weren't an update to the mod. But what the patch appears to do is make the game more locked into Steam (make it more DRM protected), making it just a little more difficult for end users (gamers and modders). Not a huge thing, but not a positive one either, in my opinion.

He is using the title provided by the article he is sourcing; this is a repost of news/blogs for discussion, not his own opinion/information unless specified. Ie. etiquette is to use the original title, whatever it is.

Companies need to stop with the DRM or come up with a more intelligent design (like steamWORKS games which actually prevent early pirate releases- can't crack what's not there). There is no point in adding any type of DRM anymore- in a nutshell, its money spent to amuse cracking groups for a night or two before they break it and release a crack that circumvents the new DRM.... except the DRM cost thousands upon thousands to license. Perhaps they should hire the crackers instead?

basically its making it harder for modders not using mod tools, as soon as mod tools are released it will most likly not be an issue as the mod tools will be made to work with the skyrim files and since you can only use skyrim on steam it will be designed to work with skyrim and steam

All i saw was the title, i refuse to believe this. Lalalallalalalalallala
