I need to get this off my chest...

This evening, I was greeted by a player on one of the CS:S servers that claimed to be a U.S. Marine. That's commendable, and I appreciate the service of my brothers and sisters at Arms. Especially those, like myself, that have been in harms way.

Now, this "Marine" supposedly was a sniper (funny how everyone is a sniper, right?), but more importantly they were there in the worst battle (according to them) of all of the war in Iraq. The fight for the city of Fallujah. One problem, they said they were there in 2005. The city of Fallujah fell to U.S. and coallition forces well before 2005. Finally, this guy says that he was awarded the Navy Cross in 2005. Another problem; statistics. There have been 23 Navy Cross awards during war on terror. Of those 23, only 17 have been awarded to Marines. Of those 17, even fewer were Marine snipers.

My point is simply this:
There are many of us in eGO that have served our respective countries, and families. All of us with different experiences. Some of us have lost friends and family to the war on terror. Some of us have even witnessed those deaths first hand. So, please... don't be like this guy... If you want to join the Marines, Army, Air Force, Navy, or even if you dont care to serve in the military at all... I will never tell someone how to live their life.. However, I will expect people to respect the sacrifices, gifts, and losses that our friends, family, and comrades have made. As a veteran, I don't ask to be treated any differently than anyone else. I dont think any of us want to be treated any differently than anyone else. I think most veterans simply wish to be treated with respect, just like everyone else.

So, the next time you try to pretend to be someone or something you arent.. keep in mind that there are people out there that have been there, and done that. We know what its like to be shipped off thousands of miles away from home, and shot at. We know times, dates, and statistics. We're here, and we'll call you out on your lies. So stop trying to be something you arent.

Trust me when I say I wouldnt wish my military experiences on anyone. There is nothing glorious about real men and women; brothers, and sisters; moms and dads; dying in the line of duty while trying to keep your homes, jobs, and lives safe.

Regards,
Bulletsponge

Could not agree with you more.

And Thanks for your service.

Well said. It's a shame people put on different masks when hiding behind a computer screen. I only hope it's sooner rather than later that they realize they are only kidding themselves.

First of all Thank you for your service Bulletsponge and I promise I won't pretend to be a Marine Infantryman who has won the Medal of Honor :P

It's really frustrating when people pretend to be something or someone they are not.Especially on sensitive matters like this one.
Defending your country is one of the greatest thing a man can ever do and participating in a battle takes a piece of yourself away.

Right on. Thank you for all the time, blood, sweat, and tears that were sacrificed.

Actually what he or she is doing is a crime. We actually had a man convicted in our state,in federal court and sentenced to prison for impersonating a U.S. marine Lt Col. in uniform and attending offical functions.

What he is doing is disgraceful to our country,United States Marine Corps, But more importantly he is dishonoring the memory of all our military troops who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

Fact: Most people who have done courageous acts of valor in war or peace time you would never know it. These people are humble, reserved and blend in, never seeking out glory or fame for what they have done.

A good friend of mine who has since passed, told me something that has stuck in my mind, i will share this with you. He said,Quote : Believe half of what you see and none of what you hear.

That player will have a another judgement day, It will not be by our hand, but the hand of God. So while he basks in his glory now, he is destined to live in very hot climate after life. Swamp

He was probably a "wannabe marine" who was rejected for some reason or other,It would have been upsetting to listen to but you should feel sorry for the guy who's mental state would be in question. We rely so much on our defense personnel, who are doing an excellent job for all of us. Keep it up guys. When I see what our guys do it make's me proud to be Australian, as most American's would be proud of you.

Agree with most of the posts.

We have to remember that 100% of what we do is in a virtual environment. Most of us play games online not only to socially interact with others, but to escape from our everyday lives. Some of these online people want to feel important, to feel special. Psych 101 teaches us it is simply a cry for attention, something they are sorely lacking in the real world. The online environment has created a massive open door to an alternate reality where people feel it is acceptable, and at times it is, to shirk the responsibilities and roles of a standard human being.

That being said, put the guy on the spot. Where was he trained (scout sniper training is only done in a select location)? When was the course (it's only given twice a year)? How many phases in the training program (there are 3)? Etc. You served, you know how to trip up the military wanna-be's.

Those who serve, know, and don't brag. No one I know who was across the sands says butt kiss about what they did.

To those true, real men and women of the service, more power to you.
Now get your asses home.

Well there is a lot of people who say they been in the army and almost every
Says the truth

I agree with most of what has been said. Thank you for serving.

Your foreign occupation is keeping our homes safe, riiiight.

Come on, the politics of where the US forces are being sent aren't a part of this thread, nor are they appropriate to discuss on our forums. It's not their (the soldiers) call, they just serve and do as they're told. That deserves a lot of respect.

I am fairly confident disrespect is not your intent, but be careful as a comment like that is inviting trouble, as well as a discussion that our forums are not the place for.

To all our members who have served or are currently serving in your countries armed forces in any capacity, thank you for your service.

I myself have had this happen many a time. Being in the service myself, it's easy to spot the real servicman out there. When I first joined I loved telling everyone what I did. Now I tend to be more quiet about it.

And I agree with the whole "Marine Sniper" comment. Funny how they always find the coolest position they can think of, and twist it in their own mind. I can't imagine any sniper wanting to talk so open about their most harsh memories, especially in such a public forum.

Thank you so much for your service. This could not be worded better. Much respect.
