EVGA GTX 570 2560 MB

or

EVGA GTX 580 3072 MB

The 580 is $200 more and I don't see the difference being worth that. I was hoping I could get some opinions about these cards that would help me make my decision.

I could spend the extra money, but I don't think it is worth it. I will eventually get a second card and run SLI. My friend is telling me to get the 580 mainly because of the higher VRAM and Core Clock speed, but I can't see how those are worth the $200 more. ugh, I don't know.

WHAT SAY YOU?!?!

umm, depends if u play games on a resolution higher than 1080p, get a gtx580, more Vram is better for higher resolutions, the 570 will do u well if u play at 1080 or lower.
Coreclock speed dosen't matter that much because the 570 and 580 are based on the same GPU chip (i think), so u can just OC a 570.

I would consider the amd 6970 2gb. You pay a price premium to get double the ram on the 570, so depending on the price, the 6970 is probably the best deal.

580 performance increase is there, but relative to the price, it is not "worth" the premium. 6970 crossfire scaling is also impressive and it will gain on 580 sli.

GTX 580 is the single fastest GPU out there. Period. It friggin' rips.

I had the same debate when I built my rig a few months ago, and I was really, really on the brink. But I wanted the best and I figured it would keep me happy for at least a few years.

I had the AMD in my sights for a while but their driver support blows compared to nVidia. Plus, for a change, the GTX runs pretty cool and quiet all things considered.

I think amd drivers are fine. When I had my 5870, I rarely had a problem (no more than with my gtx 460s). Do not disregard a better value card simply on the basis of others saying they do not like the drivers. This usually refers to a problem that was had many card generations ago. Times change.

for 1080p, the regular 1536MB 580 would be just fine.

Agreed. I run most every recent game @ 1080p on ultra/high settings with a single GTX 460 768MB. I think the increased horsepower and doubled VRAM on the 1.5GB 580 will save you a fair amount of money over the potentially unnecessary 3GB version; it'll serve you very well since you're not running multiple displays or one very large display, IMHO.

I also think that huckleberry has a good point; the 6970 2GB has a little more VRAM than the 580 1536MB, has some modest performance loss and scales better when you double/triple up; if you don't intend to ever CFX, that may not be much of a selling point, but it still is a lot cheaper than either edition of the 580.

AMD drivers are also fairly solid nowadays. I think it's more down to the individual card for EITHER brand than the brand itself anymore.

IMO with the monitors you're using/intend to use, the 6970 will still knock the socks off most any game out there or coming soon especially if the rest of your rig is up to snuff.

If your going to dole out the money(and have it) why not get the GTX 580. The way this industry changes, within in a month there's a better one out.
I like to "try" and get 2 yrs out of a VC which is tough for me if to many generations have come out in the interim.

GTX 580 isnt the fastest card out there. They came out with the GTX 590 about 2 months ago and are MUCH faster then the 580

The 590 is a monster, but I'm not the kind of person that pays that much ($750) for something that is NEW AND OMG FAST. I would love to have one though.

Welp, I was kind of leaning towards the bigger 570, but for $100 more I can get the $580. I only live once, and have the money. The bigger 580's would be a waste.

I only buy NVIDIA so thanks but no thanks on the ATI/AMD cards. :)

I just need to bit the bullet and do eeet.

No, it is the fastest single card out there, the 590 is a dual GPU card and most people put those in a different category.

Alright. Got lucky and nailed a 580 off Ebay for $465.

Almost done with the new rig. WOOHOOO!!

now you just need to add witchcraft and black magic to make it better
