Well...let's start at the beginning. Since I've played video games, I've never been much of one to sit back and watch. That I believe is part of my issue...I expect kills to come easy as a sniper, but they don't, and it makes me twitchy. Even with the bolt action rifles (I've given in to just using holographic or red dot on the semi-auto ones), I can't seem to get a kill. What is your advice on hitting a moving target? Also, what are the ranges for each tier of the ballistic scope on the bolt actions? Are there any other tips you can give me?

To be 100% honest, it's all about practice. The more you practice the better. With that out of the way. On the ballistic scope even at 900+ yards you don't compensate much. On my longest shot I was about on the second level. With the bolt action rifles, when you fire don't put a fresh round in until you saw the last one hit. Sit and wait, be patient. If you get too twitchy you will goose a round into a teammate or just give your position away. As for sniper hunting put your rifle on the bipod (If you use it), and aim the rifle down so there is no glint and just look for their glint. other then that just practice. Once you get your first just remember where it was at. Also take a ton of screenshots.

The rifle drop for all the bolt action rifles are different, alot of the times when ill snipe ill set up far back and fire some test rounds to see how far the drops are at certain buildings or objects so when people do come around you can accurately enguage them the first time. it takes practace to be able to judge your shot lead on moving targets at distance

First of all, I prefer playing objectives. I don't like sitting far away just to get one of those cool marskman headshots...so I might not be the ideal person to answer this.

Anyway, I prefer not using bolt action in this game but when I do, I like it with good scope. It's meant for headshots afterall.

I like my semi w/o huge scopes. In fact, Mod 0 and EMR (I prefer EMR) are pretty good with ironsight. You can also slap 1x scopes and they'll be just as good too. This setup is ideal for taking out still enemy in mid range. They won't stand a chance. Since you don't have a sniper scope glare (b/c you're not using huge scopes) they won't be very afraid of you...well until you put three quick shots on 'em. For anything staying still at range (not very far away btw), I always spot and then shoot 3-4 quick shots at the spotted point. They'll drop easy. At close range, pistol is your friend. And MAV (put it stationary closeby) or TUGS will help a lot. Watch the minimap, get around, and get a drop on them first. If you don't get a drop first, then getting a kill with semi becomes harder unless you've a good cover.

hope that was somewhat helpful. although i sense you already know what i said above.

practice, practice, practice, after a couple of times sniping you get a feel for sniping. Fire a couple of test rounds at first at a certain range and when a target pops up at that range, you have a feel on where to aim. Don't forget to lead shots at a distance (aim in front of the target), this takes awhile to get adjusted too.

As recon I much prefer to run the semi autos with either a holo sight or a 4x (actually my favorite is the M145 3.4x), great for close and medium range. My absolute favorite being the M39 EMR with suppressor, foregrip, and M145.

I've used the M40 a little bit, but iron sights only. Usually a one shot kill to the body in hardcore. I don't use it very often, but I'll get back into it soon.

Haven't picked up the SV98 yet...

If my team is just getting rolled and I'm getting tired of sticking my neck out for a group that can't work together that's when I pull out the M98B. 12x scope and a bipod and that sucker is deadly at long range. My preferred distance is 400-600 meters from the action. Far enough out that I'm hard to spot but still close enough that I can get a decent idea where the enemy is with the .44 scoped. I use the .44 scoped because it is the only scoped sidearm and unlike my primary in this scenario, no lens flare.

As for tracking moving targets at range, it's harder in this game than any other I've played. What I do is fire a couple of test rounds to get a feel for drop and flight time and go from there.

Best of luck!

Best advice came from a movie, and it was echoed by several real life shooters I know:

Aim small, miss small.

Now, someone teach me to fly one of those planes . . .

I personally like the bolt actions better than the semis (i like my target to go down when I shoot them). In regards to hitting moving targets, I just seem naturally able to calculate drop and lead pretty fast. When I see a dude sprinting I can almost always hit him. That said, If they're further than 500m from me I usually need to take a shot or 2 to calibrate the drop but other than that it's still pretty quick. My advice to you is to go into a metro conquest server with a bolt action and a rifle scope and get to sniping. I got a lot faster after doing this for a few rounds and I personally feel it is great practice.
