Planetside 2 will be Free to play.

PlanetSide 2 takes all the groundbreaking features from the original game – massive multiplayer battles, distinct empires to rally around, and enormous continents where intense ground and air combat unfolds – and adds features that modern gamers have come to expect out of the FPS and MMO genres. With advanced technology, years of gamer feedback, and a new SOE proprietary MMO game engine called Forgelight™, PlanetSide 2 offers a truly competitive and visceral FPS experience with massive warfare, massive customization and massive community.

Across the continents of Auraxis, thousands of players will come together in enormous battles to win control of critical territories and key resources for their empire. With a an extensive skill tree and free-form class-based system, players will be able to customize their soldier, weapons and vehicles to match their play-style, as well as the needs of their squad, outfit or empire. Battles can last for days or weeks, so players will need to build alliances and specialized combat outfits to take on long-term strategic and tactical initiatives. With air, ground and seaborne combat, the battles will be larger and more intense than ever.

KEY FEATURES:
MASSIVE WARFARE: Battles will take place not between dozens of troops, but hundreds; with air and ground vehicles slugging it out alongside squads of troops. Whether in open fields, tightly-packed urban centers or enormous structures, winning will require strategic teamwork and a quick trigger finger in the massive battles.

THREE EMPIRES: Players will have their choice to join three different empires:

TERRAN REPUBLIC – With a militaristic government, the Terran Republic uses its Imperial authoritarian might to impel humanity to peaceful coexistence through any means necessary.

NEW CONGLOMERATE – A loosely connected group of rebel factions and idealistic freedom fighters, the New Conglomerate fights against the hegemony of the Terran.

VANU SOVEREIGNTY – A technocratic faction that believes humanity can only evolve by rediscovering and tapping the lost technology of the Vanu.

BATTLE FOR TERRITORIES & RESOURCES: The core gameplay of PlanetSide 2 is about holding key territories and controlling valuable resources. Each battleground holds valuable resources and key positions, and the empire that can conquer (and manage to hold) these territories will be rewarded with fuel bonuses, ammo bonuses, tech bonuses, and more.

Persistence: In Planetside 2 battles will last longer than a match timer. Battles will last for days or weeks, and finally taking control of the base means it’s yours until someone can take it back. Working strategically as a team to capture key tactical positions such as power plants and ammo depots will have long-lasting effects that can shift the tide of battle.

ENORMOUS MAPS: PlanetSide 2 will launch with several continent maps; every inch of which will be contestable space. With the new territorial control meta-game, landmass will have intrinsic value even without notable installations or major features.

FREE-FORM CLASS-BASED SYSTEM: Players will be able to unlock diverse combat roles by advancing through the skill tree, including several classic roles from PlanetSide. As players unlock new roles, they will be able to switch between them at will.

MISSION SYSTEM: Both SOE and players will be able to drive content, easing new players into the game and allowing veterans to feed content to players.

SKILL TREES: Players will be able to build their soldier to match their play-style, or to match the needs of their squad, outfit or empire. Each combat role, vehicle and weapon will have extensive skill trees. These cert trees will allow players to grow characters laterally, unlocking weapons, attachments, equipment, specialized skills, and more.

OUTFITS: Outfits (guilds) will also be able to customize themselves – allowing outfits to have their own identity, reputation and role in the ongoing war.WEAPONS: Players will be able to access more than 20 basic weapons, which can be customized to players’ preference or purpose.

VEHICLES: More than 20 vehicles with two unique vehicles per empire. Players will be able to customize each vehicle, unlocking new skills and features

Vivox Integration: Players will be able to communicate with their squads both through keyboard and voice chat.

HERETIC! Burn him at the stake!

I can't wait for this game! Even though I played the first one only after it was out for a while, it was still a blast! This should be even better!

Just as comparison, think BATTLEFIELD...but bigger. Imagine epic air battles of 100+ Air vehicles, tank columns of 100+ rolling across open fields, Thousands of Players across 3 factions in a massive persistent world where the battle never ends. In my opinion the Original Planetside had the best squad based game-play ever to be implemented in a FPS game (yes even more so than BF) Since I began Online Multiplayer FPS gaming on the PC with CS Alpha, for the 2 years starting in 2003 that I played Planetside I had the most memorable moments of FPS Gaming. Does it have a chance to fail miserably? Of course all games do, but it also has the potential to set the bar for (hopefully) many MMOFPS games to come.

Thanks for the notice. I signed up.

Had to use a different username though, their recovery system is not worth the code it's built on!

New Video where the 3 Factions are Discussed

I don't know if Battlefield is the best comparison for this game.. That seems a little misleading since its nothing like battlefield..

I always thought of a massive scale "Onslaught" Mode (Unreal Tournament) mixed with Tribes.

the first planetside was pretty weak in world layout

but heres the world map. ps2 will be a lot better.

each continent has nodes in which the factions control, and you simply just fight to dominated them all for the ultimate goal, world dominance. here is the bottom left continent.

PS2 is going to be a LOT bigger

Planetside was fun during its prime. I've been waiting for this game for quite some time a couple of years when I first heard the announcement. as you can see here and here I have been anticipating this game longer than I anticipated Deus Ex: HR.

I will most certainly be playing this game religiously.

For all you guys that played SOE Games before. How many station credits do you guys have?
and if you guys play and don't join Vanu Sovereignty, then we won't be friends.

I have 0 credits. Then again my last payment transaction was in 2004.

Also, New Conglomerate all the way.

pffft... you would pick New Conglomerate... :) The most over populated choice.

Vanu! Stealth and Speed Masters. and the LEAST PICKED choice. which is why i love them.

I have 500 credits and I don't know why... I havent played an SOE game since the month EQ2 came out..

The game is most of the time Terran VS New Conglomerate, and all of the sudden, a small pack of Vanu Sovereignty come out of nowhere and steal the outpost at the end of the war. :)

So far, Its Exactly like Ground control, only more massiver.

I'll probably join Vanu. Prefer stealth over force.

w00t Vanu 4 Life! Lol I even have my old forum signatures from when I use to play.

A MMOFPS is exactly like a RTS? No, its nothing like Ground Control. The only thing that is "similar" are the looks of some of the units.

The game "metal fatigue" has some crazy similarities to planetside when it comes to looks.

.

I meant story/gameplay wise. Ground control has 3 factions. 1 Rebel like, 1 imperial like, and 1 advanced stealth-ish like. All faction are fighting fighting over territory (initially). More territory = More power. Planetside2 seems to have the same concept.

Then again, Ive not played ground control in a long time. Might just be confused.

Hmm, I have heard some things about it but it seems I will have to try it out!
