Hello,

TF2 crashes my pc ALL the time...

dual boot XP & Vista - both 32 bit.. crashes on both too.

M2N-E Asus Mobo
Asus Nvidia GTS 250 Video CArd
AMD Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition Deneb 3.0GHz
4GB Ram

I've tried running older drivers (video) but it doesn't seem to help. I also updated my sound max drivers... it does seem to be tied into sound (the crashing)

Any thoughts?

First step when dealing with steam games is verifying game cache.
This can be done by right clicking the game in the games library, select options then the "Local Files" tab and then "Verify integrity of game cache". This will exclude any problem related to corrupt files.

Also, as far as I remember, sound max has been causing a lot of gamers a bad headache.
Try uninstalling the drivers (reboot if needed) and test the game to see if it works then.

Further information is needed.

What kind of crashing is it?
Game freezing?
Bluescreen?
It just crashes without any notice?

Any info regarding the crash is relevant.

I am verifying files now...

As for the crash, the game will freeze or just crash. some times I'll get a hl2.exe window that says game stopped responding. Never get a blue screen though. I'll uninstall sound max and give it a go.

soundmax is uninstalled...

I just played all went well, but when I quit the game game hl2.exe crashed.

Vista just gave me this message....

To help protect your computer Data Execution Prevention has closed hl2.exe

This clearly shows uninstalling soundmax did something, and (IMO) having the game crashing only on exiting is better than having it crashing when starting or while in-game.

Far as I know, you can turn off DEP via this guide, though you should exert extreme caution while doing so. The guide explains it can cause your computer not to boot at all.

Anyways, I'm still unsure what might be causing that kind of crash. Does work flawless in winXP mode? If so, Vista is your problem. If I were you I'd try to reinstall the game, just in case.

Look at the DEP "fix" as a last sollution. Don't want to be to blame for messing something up :P

nVidia TF2 and LFD crashes very interesting...

I have been dealing with major crashing with TF2 that just started happening...maybe around November 2011..no big deal, BUT it degraded, degraded some more, and more, till the game would crash as I would go into server or shortly after. Sound loops, video lockups, and the list goes on. There are "fixes" posted, but they have only been temporary and the game eventually does it again. Now it is doing it in LFD also. I have done tons of uninstalling, reinstalling,updating,etc.,etc., but the problem is still there. Here is the thread I have been looking at and trying many of these fixes...

I hope this helps folks or gets the attention to get us that are having this problem a solid fix.

I don't know if this is your issue, but I have a GTS 250 also, and some guy I talked to, who also has this video card, says that the card has driver issues that cause it to stop responding occasionally. Doesn't necessarily sound like your problem, but my game messes up periodically as well. Might be something to look into if you exhaust all other options.
