So it has arrived, a mere few hours ago i walked to my community center and carried it back to my room.

Heres the specs:

Intel i7-940xm extreme CPU
4GB DDR3 RAM (The only semi slacking component)
1920x1200 WUXGA RGB LED screen
SLI GTX 285m
(2x320gb) 7200RPM RAID 0

Soo of course immediately i tried overclocking the 940xm......problems :( looks like i have a bad paste job because running Prime95 at 25x133 all cores, it reached 98C :O so it looks like im gonna leave this on stock and turbo mode which still reaches 3.33ghz i believe on the first and 2nd core?

Im currently downloading BF3 which is gonna be the main game i play and will edit later on with some results and GPU overclocking. Wi-fi in this dorm is sooooo slow....i think its doin 1Mbps and i have like 10GB of BF3 to download since i got it off Amazon for $35

I wouldnt even bother overclocking an alienware. Most laptops come stock to be able to run ANY game.

well yea but then whats the point of having an originally $1,000 CPU with unlocked multipliers :)

for now ill probably do a small OC or leave it alone because of temps and noise. But yea, once BF3 is done installing.......SLI GTX 285m overclocking to come

not sure if its fixed but i hope you arent downloading it through amazon, i did that i bought it from amazon and downloaded it, and then had to redownload it through origin, just download origin make an id, login add the serial from your bf3 on amazon to your games and download it via origin save yourself some time, that is if you havent done that already

OMG i completely forgot about taht :facewall:

your right...i remember having to redownload through origin again during christmas break arghhhh Im at 4GB too lmfao

Ahh now to download Origin and go through process again :glare:

good job

lol thank you......well its downloading faster than through amazon at least.

1.6Mbps, says it'll take like 2 hours.

But yea, failing at overclocking CPU right now....lets see how high i can get off the stock Power draw TDP/TDC

testing out GPU overclocks.......Furmark doesn't seem to work right. The GPU's are throttling almost 5-10 seconds into running it and even exceed 130% GPU usage which is def wrong on stock clocks.

I did play BF3 though and with most setting ultra except shadow and mesh along with no AA and high AA post and no HBAO/SSAO i can run a solid 40-60 FPS at 1920x1200 completely playable and smooth to my eyes except for some drops into 30's here and there.

Only thing is the GPU oc'ing is weird.....i was able to run the game at 700mhz core from 600mhz stock which is really high for stock voltage. I might just leave it at 675mhz and see how that goes, im only unsure because i don't have a real stability tester to use since furmark just throttles it almost immediately.

But yea, this beast runs BF3 real nice, if anything i just turn down some more settings to keep a consistent like 60FPS as the graphics looks pretty good even on medium/high. Just need to get that gaming mouse to come so i can actually play without this terrible touchpad.

My SLI GTX 285m's are throttling in furmark and i used that as an excuse for them to replace it :) and also my 940xm was running hot so theyre replacing the heatsink and thermal paste and everything, can hopefully get some good overclocks after everything is done

On-site technician is gonna come and replace both my GPU's as well as heatsinks etc...and only replace the heatsinks/thermal paste on the CPU. I mainly called to try and see if they would replace it with 5870's but tech support guy was being stupid even though he's replacing/fixing everything pretty hassle free.

Went on about something saying i have to pay the difference for me to get 5870's since my warranty is for 285m's. I told him 285m's were more expensive than 5870's at time of purchase so that would mean he'd have to pay me back lol

Anyways, best thing is the 1920x1200 RGB LED screen, its beautiful and even all low settings with high quality texture in BF3 looks freaking good. I honestly don't even see much reason to play Ultra with low FPS lol

If anything, when the new AMD 7 series come out for laptops....the 6990m price drops a lot like the 5870m did and i can go crossfire with 6990m's which is the laptop variant of a 6870 and should play almost everything, even overclocks really nice from what i hear.

Edit: Dell replaced GPU's and all is fixed
