Just wanted to say hello, apologise in advance for being totally rubbish at DOD:blushing:, and hope that teammates aren?t too frustrated. I am trying even if it may not look like it :chair:

Hello!

Welcome to the DoD:S Division! Don't worry about skill level when you're playing DoD, because in my opinion the social portion of the community trumps the competitive game play of just regular games. Come to Donner some time and we can teach you a few things if you want ;) and be sure to join us for our events! Our Advisors do a great job at organizing the events, helping make the game even greater, and helping everyone feel welcome to the community. Enjoy your time here and once again welcome!

You should see me in TF2! Just ask us for tips. Play and you will get better.

Hey! Welcome to the DoD division of eGO! Don't worry about how good you think you are! Like Sonic said, the great part about eGO is the community. So just go out there and have fun and you will learn things! See you on the servers!

Hey El34. Welcome to eGO and DoD:S!

I encourage you to come and hang out with us on ventrilo and our servers. Moreover, we have events throughout the week if you're interested.

Also, you may want to take acouple minutes to actually join our community if you wish.

If you have any questions, feel free to PM a member of DoD:S Leadership.

^ These guys have pretty much summed it up. Skill should be the last thing you are concerned with when gaming, go out there and have fun and get to know some people. See you in the servers.

If you need help with anything im on vent mostly every day. Also if you need help becoming a member just let me know. :)

Skill, what is skill? join us and enjoy the game you will get better every day, have fun and you will be with a lot of other players who enjoy the game.

Thanks for all the kind words of encouragement but?.. I?m just rubbish :-) I played the original DoD, Half-Life 2 mod back in 2000 plus every version since and although I was never very good I wasn?t this bad.

I?ve looked into all possible excuses, failing eyesight, slowing reactions, onset of senility, poor connection, even that everyone else is cheating(joke) or a plot by my isp to make look so crap at online games that I stop use less of the ?Unlimited ( bad joke)? bandwidth that I pay for.

I don?t understand why it is easier to hit a little grey dot in a tower at the equivalent of 200 yards or so, with one shot, than it is to hit a target 3-10 feet away running in the other direction. I remember heated, forum discussions about ?laggy hit boxes in Source games? and ?Cone of fire has ruined the game? etc. But everyone else got used to it. I did see a a youube video a CSS player made years ago, which showed the hit boxes as pink blocks. As the sprite ran off, it was as if the hit boxes were on elastic and initially got left behind and the caught up again when the sprite stopped? don?t know if it was accurate but it seemed believable?

Anyway, repeated apologies to team mates, but if you play axis?. Bet your stats are better since I came along :-Dand here?s a netgraph screenshot, if anyone has any suggestions for the best rate settings etc. to help with a trans-Atlantic connection I would be grateful, some kind soul tried to help in-game but I?m not sure if I entered the correct settings or (grateful for the help and no offence intended) even if they knew what they were on about.

Why are you being so hard on yourself [no pun intended]?
I am pretty sure your settings are fine. [they look ok to me, but i am not an expert :p]

Like you said, you just began playing the game, so it is understandable that you'll take time to get used to it. :)

Hell, in any average game, my kill/death ratio is around 1/2. [i like to rush a lot, especially infront of MGs]
If you want, you can always play in servers where some of the vets are playing; you may die a lot at first, but its, more or less, the best way to learn how to avoid getting hit and kill the enemies.

I see choke, fps and ping issues. Perhaps someone more knowledgeable than me can point out how you may fix this. Maybe you want to post in the tech help forum. Give them your computer specs and that picture.

Yea you have multiple issues including your interp. The ping probably isn't something we can do much without outside you getting a better connection. However, fixing your interp will do a ton along with a few other settings.

Hop in ventrilo tonight and I will do what I can with your autoexec to get you straightened out. If you don't have a program named team viewer it might make it a little easier on me if you downloaded it. If not I can still set you up with an autoexec that might help. If nothing else we can hop in the event server and get your lerp fixed.

As far as the connection goes its ADSL and I get a 22-30 ping on UK servers but the trans-Atlantic hop is a killer. I wouldn't be too worried about the 150 ping if it felt stable but this feels like playing on 150-500 :O. Back in the day when we we're all on 56k a stable 250 ping was very playable, people even got stroppy with me when I upgraded to ISDN and my 120 ping was considered state of the art haha

The settings concern me a bit, I like to play game as a vanilla install, no custom config or anything but apparently, for modern day broadband connections, the stock rates in DoD are pretty poor/awful so they really need to be changed. I can remember the rate, cmd rate and update rate but it was the interlerp setting that I wasn't to happy about changing ....and now I can't remember what was changed :facewall:. I'll have a read up on some stuff see if I can jog my memory.

Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 19914 kbps 1099 kbps
Line Attenuation 12 db 3 db
Noise Margin 4 db 7 db

I cant use in game voice because my PC is essentially a Cubase rig and the ASIO soundcard/drivers are not designed for gaming. I even tried a large capsule condenser mic (CD quality) on a boom stand aka radio presenters, sounded fantastic in DAW but wouldn't register in steam games.

Thanks for your time everyone

Welcome to the DoDs Family! Don't worry about skill, just have fun.

Well some of the rates need to be changed due to your location to help. The FPS can be boosted if you have any video setting to lower. You should also change a few things in your autoexec to optimize hit reg and other things.

cl_interp .021
cl_interp_ratio 1
cl_cmdrate 101
cl_updaterate 101
cl_smooth 0
fps_max 300

Those might help. The cl_interp will be different for you and should be set as low as possible while still remaining stable or white in the graph under interp. If that interp number is yellow or orange you want to increase it until it becomes white.

As an example, if I set it to 19 by typing in cl_interp 0.019 and it's yellow I want to increase it, so I would try cl_interp 0.02 and then cl_interp 0.021 until it's white.

This is via my limited understanding and playing around with it a bit. If you need help setting these up, let me know and I can show you what an interp of say 500 can do and why a good interp level is important.
