Strange Lag

I'm not sure who can help me with this, but I have been having some issues with in-game lag. I am certain that based on the requirements for the game (DoD:S) that my system far exceeds those requirements, so I rule out a problem with my Video Card, Processor, etc. Unless I'm an idiot, I don't see where hardware could be the issue.

The Lag:
Essentially during my game play the past day or so, I have short to long intense lag spikes. The weird thing is my latency is often 50-60 range. But sometimes it suddenly jumps past 60 and possibly into the 70s. Then I have intense lag. After a while, this subdues or it gets worse. But basically, I start to shoot at someone and it's like it doesn't register at all. Then, a couple of seconds later, I'm dead. I read the stickies the tech sticky here and I think I might have an issue with packets. I just can't determine a cause.

Interestingly enough, this never happened before I had GameRail.

Can anyone help me with this?

I can certainly try to give a better description if needed.

Turn off GameRail and try again. Post your results.

Open your console and enter net_graph 3. Post what your choke and loss are when standing around and also when in the middle of a firefight.

**What is your ISP and exact service and speed? For the speed go to www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/

Do you have a wireless connection or a wired one?

Just for general knowledge, system specs please. No details needed, just basic stuff. (3.0 ghz p4, 2 gb ram, that sort of stuff)

Please post all of the above.

Well, for one thing, GameRail does not work with my connection unless there is a way to bypass it. I got a message from them saying that my ISP blocks the type of ping they use. So, until they fix and/or change this, I can't use their system.

Wired Connection @ a University. It is a business grade T1 I guess. It is 10 mbps. I can't use that website as I don't know my ISP Provider or its phone number. I don't know where this information would be found either.

System...Hopefully you don't need more than this
1.9 Ghz AMD Dual Core
2 GB RAM
ASUS M2N Motherboard
NVidia 7300 GT
160 GB HDD

I'll get back to you on the choke

Okay the choke thing....

When I sit in the spawn the choke varies between like 5 to 40 something. Loss as far as I could tell is 0.

When in a firefight with many guys, my choke often get 90-140 or so. This is when I really notice the lag. Loss still seems stay 0.

In both cases, I never have seen loss change from zero.

I will say that my ping average 40-50 as well as my fps.

Wow that's TERRIBLE choke. Mine is zero, period. 140 is absolutely horrendous.

Open your console with the tilde ~ key and type the following commands:

rate 30000
cl_cmdrate 100
cl_updaterate 66

This *should* bring your choke down a ton. Please post results (new choke values) as well as your average fps while standing around and while in a firefight.
Your rates might need to be adjusted further but I can only tell with that information.

Alright....Excellent Apples

My new values:

fps: high 40s-50s (generally)
ping: holds pretty constant in same area sometimes as low as 30-35
Choke: Sometimes is 0, but the most it ever gets is like a single digit. Maybe 10 if it's lucky. Generally though, it sticks to near zero.
Loss: Generally sticks at zero, but sometimes I get like a 1-4 or something. That's about as high I saw it get.

My gameplay is so much better now. I don't lag hardly at all. Thank you so much Apples!

No problem at all. Have fun playing without lag!

If you notice that your choke starts rising again, change your cl_updaterate to 55 or 60 and you should be just about perfect.
