USB OS installation

Hello so I recently acquired a netbook in a trade and wanted to install a new operating system on it. So I popped my 8 GB thumb drive in, formatted in NTSC (Sorry if the acronym is wrong but you get the idea) and extracted the ISO to it using winrar. I tried XP and windows 7 and when I try to boot my netbook from the USB drives I get "Missing operating system"

Any Ideas?

Wait, did you install the OS on the USB stick or did you extract the installation files over to the USB stick?

You can create a bootable USB installation of Windows 7 by using Microsoft's official utility which you can download from here.

I was surprised that Microsoft actually made a working utility.
