This isn't a movie prequel mind you, but an actual prequel to the comic. The series is being published by DC and is not being written by Alan Moore. This new story will attempt to flesh out the back story of the various characters of the original.

Of course Allan Moore says:

Mr. Moore, who has disassociated himself from DC Comics and the industry at large, called the new venture ?completely shameless.?

Speaking by telephone from his home in Northampton, England, Mr. Moore said, ?I tend to take this latest development as a kind of eager confirmation that they are still apparently dependent on ideas that I had 25 years ago.?

and

?I don?t want money,? he said. ?What I want is for this not to happen.?

and

?As far as I know,? he said, ?there weren?t that many prequels or sequels to ?Moby-Dick.? ?

So how do you guys feel about this?

After first seeing and reading Watchmen, I did think it would be sort of nice to see a little background on the characters, but the comic already provided that through the story and its flashbacks. So its not really necessary to have these new comics to come out, especially against the original author ideals.

Plus it would pretty much ruin the story itself, Watchmen was about the end of the era of masked heroes in that universe and brought up major political points that can still be applied today. It wasn't about fighting some villain every week in a new issue, that's why people loved Watchmen (along with the amount of detail in dialogue and color).

So honestly I think DC is doing this to just make a few quick bucks off people who probably didn't understand the story and didn't think the original comics gave enough background even though each character had their past already explained.

i agree with every word of this, besides you know that its just going to be a bunch of the comedian in vietnam and silk specter fan service

I hope I am unable to understand it just as much as the first one!

Ehhh, Watchmen was a great comic book but not entirely GROUNDBREAKING. I enjoyed it for what it was. However, I seriously think Alan Moore should stop being a whiny little girl (for lack of better terms) when it comes to today's culture. Sure most of it is mindless mush and confusing storylines, but he should really just stop being such an egomaniac and "know-it-all." He even complained about the film even though the director tried to make it so much like the comic (aside from the ending) even when other directors could've made it so much worse. A Watchmen prequel IS a bad idea, but Alan Moore has to really stop being a pessimist. it's one thing to complain about today's medium of comics and films and such, but to keep bashing it is just asking for attention.

PS - I really like Moore's work, including Watchmen.

Although seeing comments about this on other websites did get me thinking about the history of the Minutemen, that's really the only thing that's not so well explained in the comic. Sure it says what happened to them but not how they started or other background stuff like why they joined or why they did it in the first place.

But the other comic's will probably go down like this:
Rorschach beats people up, does cool/anti-social things that make people think he's awesome.

The Comedian's similar to Rorschach but with a bit more satire on society rather than full anti-social.

Silk Spectre will probably complain about her mom or falling in love with Dr Manhattan and other stuff (I thought she was pretty boring imo)

Niteowl will probably show him and Rorschach working together as they were partners. Probably like batman but would feel more human level

Dr Manhattan....him blowing people up and stuff I guess? (not a whole lot for him to do since his entire backstory was explained)

Ozymandias will probably show him gaining riches and power

The thing about Moore is that he is a huge proponent of Comics as an artistic medium. He feels that the medium should be able to stand on its own without being preverted via adaptations into other mediums. He has a point since his work has had a poor adaptation or two...The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen for example.

As for this prequel, I sort of agree with him. Watchmen is a great read and can easily stand on its own without the need for a sequel or prequel. The whole thing feels like an unneeded addendum to a work that in itself is whole. The comic industry is unfortunatly just as bad as the film and game industry when it comes to unneeded sequels and prequels.

It seems a little pointless, Watchmen already went into the backstory enough. I don't expect it to be very good without Alan Moore working on it. But hell, if it gets good reviews I would probably get it.

Oh no, I completely understand his right and rank amongst comic book artists/authors to criticize today's mediums, but it seems as if everything that he disagrees with comes out, he has to go ahead and completely bash it when a simple "I don't like/agree with it" answer is sufficient. I respect Alan Moore and his works but he needs to stop with his criticisms and keep a much more broad mind

I agree Moore is pretty vocal with his criticisms. Though I'm pretty sure it's because people keep asking him for his opinion. Like the second this news broke, The New York Times was calling him up for a rant.
