Question about registry cleaner

I have been endlessly searching for a cause to my lag issues and here is my most recent questionable solution. Someone has recommended that

"if you haven't cleaned your registry in a while. This is necessary. Your registry holds all the information regarding updates, installs, un-installs etc. Each one of those events produces a key. That key needs your PC's resources and free space. So, if you clean your registry, you make more resources available for speed. Do a registry scan if you got more than 20 errors you should clean it."

That being said. Should I do this, and is there a free way to do this? (I briefly searched for registry cleaning options and it seems to be something I need to purchase).

I don't know about what's in the registry, but I do know that you need to clean your computer up periodically. I use Advanced SystemCare and Glary Utilities, but there is also CCleaner. All three are free although there is a version of Advanced SystemCare that you have to pay for if you want to. None of those are strictly "registry cleaners", they clean various other problems that come up as well.

I personally like Advanced SystemCare because it also checks for malware, deep registry checks, defrag the registry, optimizes the system and startup, fixes shortcuts, cleans junk files, does a privacy sweep, and several has several other tools.

I'm not an expert here and this is just my opinion and the problems that I have encountered.

I've had many problems with computer crashing and have used registery cleaning software that came with my internet provider anti-virus program (Norton) and it did clean-out my registry but still didn't fix my computer from crashing. I've also purchased a registery program online that said it could fix my registery, which it still didn't fix my computer crashing.

After consulting with Microsoft Tech people, they told me to never use the registry cleaner or any registry cleaning software out on the market. It alters your registry too much and will cause many unrepairable errors. The best thing you should do is use a good anti-virus program and defrag your drives on a weekly basis or save your drives information, wipe it and reinstall windows. Also try using your windows disk and instead of reinstalling it, just choose repair windows. It won't delete any of your programs and should adjust the registry.

If you still have system crashes or warning messages pop-up like for example: undetected devices on your USB ports, a simple cmos clear should fix that problem and many other problems.

Also, you can go into your windows control panel, click on administrative tools, then computer management and click on the event viewer. The viewer should tell you what critical or errors that are occurring withing the last hour, 24 hour and week. Maybe that will help you pin-point some of your problems.

If all you want is a registry cleaner, I've used this before. Never had any problems and the cleaner alone is free.
Also, most registry cleaner create a backup of the registry in case you have any problems, so you can just restore it.

I'd recommend CCleaner. Use it myself, and it lets you backup the register before cleaning it up.
