Skyrim Creation Kit Releasing Tuesday with "Surprise"
11:30 PM - February 6, 2012 by Kevin Parrish - source: Bethesda

Bethesda hinted via Twitter that the Creation Kit for Skyrim will launch on Steam this Tuesday, February 7.

ZoomBethesda's Pete Hines said via Twitter on Friday that the Creation Kit for The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim is on track for a Tuesday, February 7 release. He also hinted to a "special surprise" that will accompany the release which is rumored to be an official high-res texture pack for the PC version.

As reported earlier, the Creation Kit features the same toolset used to create Skyrim's virtual environment. However, it also includes lots of new features such as the ability to build archives. The kit will be free to download via Valve's digital distribution platform supposedly on Tuesday if all goes well with the release schedule. Until then, modders are encouraged to check out the Creation Kit Wikki for more details.

Also slated to launch on Tuesday via Steam will be the Skyrim Workshop, an organized hub for what modders produce using the Creation Kit. This community-driven mod storefront will allow users to easily upload, download, and install their mods, making sharing custom content easier than ever before. Fans won't need to purchase the mods, but they can subscribe to them for free, essentially allowing for automatic updates to every Skyrim mod installed via the Workshop.

"With Skyrim Workshop, you can browse and search for the latest or highest rated mods, subscribe to any that interest you, rate your favorites and post feedback," Bethesda stated last week. "Once you've subscribed to some mods, start the Skyrim launcher and you'll see your subscribed mods automatically download. The launcher will even check if a mod has been updated and grab the latest version."

Be sure to keep your eye on Steam for the launch of both the Creation Kit and Bethesda's Skyrim Workshop. Happy modding!

I like that Bethesda is supporting the PC version more but im not sure how the guys at Nexus are going to like these features since most of the modders upload their content there.

Modders fill in the gaps between what is there and what should be there. I hardly doubt someone will be mad that bethesda is finally learning a thing or two and incorporating particular features in an official capacity after a modder has brought them to light. (I mean really, the thought of a highres texture pack being necessary [ie. not already included] is o.o. They blatantly took from Deadly Reflex and Midas Magic, why not source from other mods as well?).

I remember that Morrowind had a mod tool, I used to play with that all the time! Had they not included one in these later games at all?

Yeah so far every game has, including Fallout. Skyrim was just released late. It's very similar to Morrowind and Oblivion's. But as expected, it's easier to use and is.. well..10 years newer.

New hires texture pack definitely adds eyecandy while still keeping the Skyrim feeling.
You don't notice the textures have changed, but they look far better. If you understand my way of saying it.

Also sweet with the Creation Kit. Will definitely be wooping around with it. Not to mention the Skyrim Workshop. Lovely!

Bethesda's HD pack looks nice... but it is shameful. Shameful that Bethesda, a game studio with professionals at their beck and call, can not make an HD pack as nice as a single modder.

Regardless, grab the Bethesda HD pack and then grab the HD pack on nexus by nebuLA (http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=607) and fix your .ini file to allow user content to overwrite Bethesda's HD content.

Just remember Cacophonus, what a single modder can do is free for everyone to use, whereas what Bethesda would do would require them to pay their professionals. Law of diminishing returns states, in essence, that at some point, you won't get back as much as you put into a project. Bethesda may have simply reached their limit in that regard. Not saying I like that decision, but there possibly could be a business reason behind closed doors we're not privy to.
