Windows media player video viewing

It seems I am unable to view dvd's using windows media player without purchasing a dvd decoder. Has anyone else experienced this problem, and is there some safe and free dvd decoder I can download somewhere? Thanks.

You have means to the Internet, buying DVD(or anything else DVD software related) decoders is unacceptable.
