So I had so much good footage to go through on the replay from tonight's event and the crummy replay only recorded 34 seconds of the whole hour. The heck is up with that?

Does the replay only last as long as the player is alive because it stopped right around the time I died.

A replay ends when you die. If you want to record again, save another replay. Replay system is very unstable and unreliable. Sometimes the clip just won't work. A lot of the other time it'll crash your TF2. With each new update, the chances of your replay breaking goes higher. Also, whenever I record a replay, voice talk of players is always delayed by a few seconds.

The good thing about replay is it's extremely easy to use and the quality is just fantastic.

If you want more reliable use TF2 demo.
record by typing
record yourdemonamehere
and when you are done type
stop
to stop recording

tf2 demo is 100% reliable, at least from my experience. but i also get voice chat bug with demo. the quality here isn't as superb as replay (on my end at least) but you can still do lots of things you could with replay editor...it's just a bit more complicated.

edit: you could probably get amazing quality with demo too if you take the hard way and mess around with .tga files

in other news, i'm not sure which event you are referring to but if it's the one where we played BM 2.0 beta around noon or so central time...then i've the replay and demo saved up.

what Shawn said. (although you forgot to tell him to type it out in console)

It's not named demos though. It's called Source Recorder, a handy in-game recorder exclusive to the Source Engine. As far as I know, all Source Engine games should have this option. Both replay and Source Recorder files are called .dem files which can only be opened by the Source Engine of the respective game from which you recorded.

The point of replay is that it's extremely convenient and doesn't require a lot of work to use. In addition, they record every single life and you can choose to save the life by pressing f6 by default.

Source Recorder is less convenient because you can't just bind it to a key, you gotta name the .dem file first. It also requires a little playing around with console to render it. In addition, they don't record every single life you experience and only start recording when you type the command in console. (ex: you got an awesome Market Gardener kill, but you died. you won't be able to record that awesome moment by using Source Recorder.

In any case, both are pretty buggy but they're pretty handy tools to use when you wanna record something in-game due to their small file sizes. (they're not actually footage, they're scripts that make the game play out to what you just experienced)

Just FYI, Replay is basically just an STV Demo with a frontend UI attached to it, and is less reliable.

STV demos and normal demos are the way to go if you want to make actual videos, they have the exact same quality but they require more work to use properly.

I know about the demo function, the downside with that is i'm stuck with just one viewing mode and don't have free camera options to get nice angles of shots. So it looks like I'm stuck with the replay function that isn't as good either.

Yah the replay stops when you die I know that sucks but that is how it works

It doesnt really work with instant-respawn. It will only catch your last life if you press it while your dead. If you want to catch a life you gotta press it during it.

You're COMPLETELY wrong.

You can use free camera and all the functions that Replay has in Source Recorder. Just go look up a video about how to use it.

Only with STV Demos. As far as I'm aware normal Demos will not render you when you go to freecam and they also will not render anything you couldn't see at that point. That being said, the smoother is a very nice tool to get some great camera shots.

So basically I'd have to use the replay function if I wanted to record what Tweedledee and Tweedledum where doing off on the other side of the map where I obviously could not see during game since it sounds SFM can not render anything not in my vicinity? It appears it is more suited for making scenes that mainly deals with myself and those around me. All I want to do is have the ability to splice in small scenes of players getting fragged (including myself) anywhere on the map and use any angle I want(1st, 3rd, freecam).

When I looked up on how to smooth a demo it reminded me on when I used to animate models using 3DS Max.

I found these tutorials from a guy named Son of Dad that are about a year old on TF2 film making and talks about smoothing, demos, and stv's he seems to be well known for his videos.
