Holy crap, Batman! They're wiping us from behind!

The 680 is beast. I'm excited to see the rest of the 600 series lineup now.
 
I just wish they had stuck with the proposed plan of this being the mid range card and still released the true high end one. Still pretty impressive, especially the power savings.
 
I'm not buying a GTX580 anymore. I'm going to save another $200. Extra chores, ftw!
 
The most important thing about this card is the price. $500 on newegg. It is what we needed for the 7xxx line to finally come down from these insane prices.

Yeah I'll ride it out and wait for a 660. The prices should be good on those.

Well there's still the dual card and maybe a 685. You never know.
 
I'm not really impressed.

The 580 wiped the floor with the 6970

the 680 beats the 7970 by a bit. It really doesn't show the same gigantic delta in performance as before.

AMD has had their time to settle in, their yields are only going to get better. Price drop, and bam, 680 is no longer competitive.

Welcome to the world of marketing...

The key word is "beats". The 680 will still trump the 7970, and we've only seen the first cards as of yet...I'm sure EVGA will be rolling out their versions later this month or during April.
 
That is because they decided to forgo releasing their true highend card when their mid range card had enough performance to compete. That and the production problems.

Anyways, it doesn't wipe the floor with the 7970 like I had hoped, but it does win with less power and a cheaper price. Hopefully the rest of the lineup will add some good price/performance cards as well.

I have a 580 and it runs everything fine at max. No need for me to upgrade. Plus, the performance increase isn't "mind blowing". While I'd love the power decrease, I can live without it.

Plus, never know, if the 580 comes down a bit in price, I can buy another one, and smoke everything out there!
 
I have no idea why people think the 680 isnt the highend card. (480, 580) the only thing I see them making that would be faster would be a 690 or dual gpu... clock for clock the 7970 beats the 680 just by a little... kinda surprised that it doesn't dominate like all of the hype said it would. still a good card dont get me wrong.

From what I gather this card was not originally intended to be released as the 680, but rather the 660 or 670. Then a monster card to totally mop the floor later. Things change.

It does not dominate how it was planned because the plan changed. The performance of this one was good enough to challenge the 7970 so nvidia stuck with this as high end. The naming scheme that has been followed suggests the current release was meant to be mid range. However, being greedy businessmen (and the manufacturing probs of 28nm), they decided to screw the consumer over and price gouge us. Anyways, at least it was priced slightly lower, though I would like to have known what the original intended price was.

That logic isn't really that good.

stock 7970 - stock 680: performance delta = 1
stock 7970 - factory overclocked 680 : perf delta = 2
factory oc'd 7970 - factory oc'd 680: perf delta = 1

See what I'm saying? You can't really argue that overclocking will make one car better than the other, unless one or the other has overclocking abilities outside of normal (neither of these cards do, both overclock about the same)

I really don't see it possible for nvidia to have something higher end right now (other than a dual GPU 690 type thing). If there is, it would be like a 8800 series jump all over again, which, since we aren't really dramatically changing architechture here, i don't see happening. They might have a higher clocked 685 or something, but i don't think there will be another new higher end die.
