Stereotypes in gaming

Hey folks,

I was thinking about something today that often comes to mind when I hop onto any given INS server and enjoy a few minutes gaming with some of the MOD division classics like lordofruins and insshooter. When a lot of people think gamer, they think Cheeto dust, mom's basements, for marijuana use, and of course obesity. REALLY wanted to point something out real quick, a check-list of things I do, not to spark my ego, but to bring to light the fact that us gamers actually do have something going on.

-Writer for Royal City Randoms
-Drug/alcohol speaker (schools, private meetings, etc.)
-Mancave enthusiast (Had to throw it in there)
-Football player
-Hockey player
-Diehard Canucks/BC Lions/Saints/Blue Jays fan
-Student
-Member of EdgeGamers Organization
-Advocate for shenanigans

Some of these things may not seem relevant, but while the internet is plagued by humourless attempts on meme's, and hate towards people we don't even know, us gamers, us people live productive lives, and have much more going on for us.

I don't know what relevance this holds to anything, but thought I'd take the time to express my opinion around the matter, because I personally hate being labled as anything but the person I am (pull out the tissues).

Anyways folks, until next time, I hope you all enjoy another day in eGO.

Traditional Stereotypes of Gamers:
Fat/Obese
Lives in parent's basement
Drinks high amounts of Mt. Dew or other energy/soft drinks.
Lack social skills
Greasy skin and hair, pimples
Think of the troll gamer from South Park from its World of Warcraft episode.

Reality of Gamers:
Can be in shape, and thin
May not drink caffeinated drinks
May live on their own, or have their own family to support
Regular social interaction amongst group of friends, coworkers, and peers
Observes daily hygiene routines

And then Raul tried to go into his personal differences between what the stereotypes were and what he really did. For added measure, some of the stuff I do beyond gaming:

Golf, tennis, soccer
Rock Climbing
Tae kwon Do
Regular study group meetings for grad school
Working out
Business trips
At least, that's what I did the past month....

After Raul nearly derailed this thread forever, Snipeye and Vikkturr brought it back.

Granted, I'm on the younger side of gaming, but I'm pretty much the IT expert of my class, and my locker is the hangout of our class due to all the gaming content I have hung up in there.

I'll go with it. I do fall under some of the stereotypes.
-I'm on reddit.
-I spend hours a day on my computer.
-I'm the only one most people know who can access most routers in five minutes. (Of course, they didn't know the default username/password. I guessed it.)
-I own almost all of the Valve games for PC.
-Oh yeah, I have a PC. Not a damned XBOX or PS3.

However, that means almost nothing compared to the things I do that aren't at all "nerdy" in any way.
-Basketball. <3
-I'd definitely say I'm one of the more popular people I know. Maybe I get jokes made about me a lot, but I have lots of dedicated friends irl. (In other words, I'm socially active.)
-This could be debated, but I don't explicitly listen to "nerd" music (dance/electro: how it got associated with us...beats me).
-I'm healthy and don't have issues with obesity, pimples, or the other physical attributes Snipeye mentioned.

In conclusion, the reality is really not the stereotype in any way. We're still all unique people with unique preferences and lives. My question is how the stereotype came to be in the first place...?

I play paintball airsoft snowboard soccer and basketball. I do spend a lot of time on my computer tho haha and I do hang out with friends just about every other day xD
