How do you import an image, and then make it semi-transparent? (As seen in the second video)

If I understand your question right : I change the layer's blending mode from 'normal' to something like 'lighten' or 'color dodge'. This picks out the lighting and color from the layer and makes any shadows or darkness transparent.
