Its been in the news worldwide alerting people and organizations about the new wave of cyber attacks. One of the more latest attacks have been headlined "Ransomware".

Once infected, some files may be locked from your computer and a e-mail pop's up saying something like: "That you have an engaged in an illigal activity requesting you to pay x$ to get your files back." and stating that the message is from your local police authority. Versions of the message differs from country to country

Cause: Trojans that easily spread and infect computers by simply visiting a infected website or by downloading unknown material.

Flash, PDF and Java seem to be the main security breach. Social media websites like Facebook have been one of the sources where this Trojan has been found.

According to Microsoft, 85% of the harmfull codes that have affected their OS in 2011 was from Java and Flash.

Experts say that this specific Trojan that has its roots from Russia is injected via Java. Java's plug-in for browers are a very common plug-in and most computers users have it installed.

Recommended actions and tips:

  • Make sure that you have the latest Java update and **remove the old versions you have installed
( Latest "time of post" version is Version 6 Update 31) Visit: http://www.java.com for more information

  • Latest browser update
  • Have a good Antivirus software and keep it updated
  • Make sure your firewall is activated

**How can I remove older versions of Java?
You can safely remove older versions of Java from your system by following the instructions on Java uninstallation instructions for Windows page.

Tips:

  • Stay away from unknown websites\links
  • Do not open files you don't recognize
  • Be careful with what information you share online
