Need a new router

Hey all, I need a new router. I currently have the basic modem/wired/wireless router that comes with mediacom and the wireless functionality is horribly unstable and unrelyable. I am looking to trade this in for their single modem and buying my own router.

Required specs:
At least 1 lan port
Wireless N with dual antennas
High powered wireless, the longer the range the better

I will be connecting this to a cable modem, my data transter package rates are 12mbps down and 1 mbps up.

My ideal price range is under $100, but I could probably do up to $125 if it would be that much better.

What do you reccomend?

Based on your needs and price range I was able to find this device that meets your needs on paper. This isn't the only router you should look at but I was hoping to help you with a viable option. Also after reviewing your requirements I noticed this router doesn't have dual antennas however newer technology is starting to have internal antennas that are just as good as external. The D-Link dir 655 is a great router. Its what I own and it works very well and has good reviews. I would also warn you to stay away from netgear, I've had bad experiences with them and they do not have a great reputation.

The one thing missing is the USB port for networked storage: trust me, they are ineffective on consumer based WAPs/WiFi routers. The throughput is typically not what it should be.

Although the 5ghz band is better for things like HD video, it can actually be worse for things like everyday internet usage. From what I've seen, the technology really isn't perfected yet, and 5ghz isn't much of a jump, so its not worth buying. Also, trendnet and netgear are bad brands. If you do go for dual bands, find another brand, like linksys or belkin.

I have only used D-Link (at home/recreation) so I cannot say from personal experience whether Netgear or Trendnet are bad from a gaming stand point. At this point I think it's a matter of opinion on what people prefer to use. There is a netgear in the shop I'm sitting in now and it's working perfectly however I am not gaming here but we have plenty of computers connected to it wirelessly with no issues.

Since I do DSL tech support I can confirm this. People often mistake this exact issue for their int disconnecting. I'm an advocate of Linksys my last wireless g modem from them lasted for almost 12 years. Dlink and Belkin are also good ones, I personally don't go for netgear just have had bad experience with them in the past.

Well, I've had a bad experience with netgear. Also, the reviews on both are subpar. People cite lots of weird issues, short life, and that they don't deliver the specs they claim.

Well I think you would advocate for wireless N now and not wireless G. But it is nice to see others also avoid dual band.

As for the D-link I suggested. Its amazing. The features available on it's web interface are great. I can do anything I need on it. I used to host a minecraft server for a little while and all the features were great. (port-fowarding, DNS, assigning ip addresses, ect.) It handles 5-7 computers, and 1-2 gaming devices at anytime. Any lag comes from the ISP, not the router. The connection is stellar. It gives a great connection even at the opposite end of the house.
