I wonder if the reason our servers with certain maps (Turbine and Dustbowl come to mind immediately) don't do as well as others, particularly in rotations, is because feelings about them are highly contrasted. For example, let's say the Valve Maps server rtv's Turbine with 60% of the vote and then empties. The 40% of the server who didn't vote for it absolutely hate it and disconnect immediately. Then the 13 people left in the server after the map loads don't want to play in a half-empty server and leave. Then we have the hassle of filling a server, regardless of what map is running. In this case, there might be a population to support turbine but the sudden disconnecting of half the server all at once is what kills it.

On the other hand, a two map server with say turbine/dustbowl would only attract people who would actually play on turbine. It can live off the population of people who do like turbine and dustbowl, and wouldn't suffer from sudden mass disconnects since it's expected to come up next map change.

I mean, I'm guilty of this. I strongly support valve maps, but if cp_well gets voted up I disconnect before map change. I cannot stand that map and no amount of hats will make me tolerate sitting through 30 minutes of the most boring game of TF2 I will ever play. When the entire TF2 community is split half and half on this issue (like Dustbowl) we see issues of it in RTV that wouldn't arise in a 24/7 or even two-map split server. I guess this is just food for thought?


Now for an actual question:

What's the percentage of times Option 1 in the RTV gets selected? Because it really bugs me when I see cp_well as option 1 because it means I have to leave soon.

Yes, that is a large part of why Turbine was not successful on our server. In fact this is what killed both the Dustbowl and Gravelpit servers we used to have. They lost a bit of their playerbase because they were changed to a different map (Halloween map) for almost a month, and were struggling. The decision was made to combine the two, but unfortunately basically no one who enjoyed GPit liked DBowl, and visa verse.

As far as I can tell, Turbine is simply not enjoyed by the 'usual' Valvemaps crowd as far as I can tell. Another problem is just the way RTV Works.

Lets pretend that it is a full 24 people playing on pl_goldrush, the map is about to end and the nominations are:

1. ctf_turbine
2. cp_badlands
3. cp_granary
4. cp_well

3 of those maps are very similar in play style and all have generally the same player base because they are all 5 CP Push maps with similar layouts and features.

7 out of the 24 people vote for Turbine because they enjoy it and like ctf.

6 people vote for Badlands

6 people vote for Granary

5 people vote for Well

Now we hit a problem. The majority of people voted for Turbine, but 17 of the 24 people technically voted to play a 5 CP Push map, their votes were simply split because of the higher variety of map choices for them. Those 17 people did not necessarily want to play a ctf game, and may not enjoy it. But just from the way rtv works a ctf map gets voted in anyway.

This is one of the things that has to be taken into consideration when building a map rotation or map list. All the maps should preferably be at least enjoyed by the same audience, and unfortunately Turbine simply did not fit in to our chosen audience and the group that was helping to start the server and get it running. Turbine is a popular map, there is no reason that it cannot work for eGO that I am aware of, but it will not work on our Valvemaps server.

As for a DBowl/TBine rotation server. I would also be dubious as to whether it would work or not. I don't think that the DBowl and TBine crowds cross very much, but I'm not sure. I would rather try a 24/7 Turbine if it came to that.



Now an answer for the actual question you had, I do not know. Based on my experience I'd say that the first option for rtv is chosen around 40-50% of the time, but I don't have any way to measure that statistic. If some brave Valvemaps soul maybe wanted to keep a record while they were playing that would be an interesting thing to find out.

Then I could make it so GPit was always first and make the return of the 24/7 GPit server!!!

If you pressed 1-4 while the vote was up, it would give a message like "Try reading the vote, instead of just pushing random buttons." and then bring up the vote window again. That and I don't think many people know about the revote option, so sometimes you're trying to switch weapons when you accidentally vote for the map. I also assumed it would be easy to get that statistic since the server has to send out the RTV, it should be able to save which number is voted on.

You could perhaps test it by making it so the same 4-5 maps always show up in the same order and see if it affects map percentages. Though that may also affect population if dustbowl gets voted up ever other time.

I brought this up with our Tech team, but it looks like the only way to record the statistics would be to make a special plugin for it, and I don't feel that it is worth our Techies valuable time to do that. As for changing the numbers used to make a vote, that is something we can look into doing.

What rig do you have to play games?

A Dell XPS, I forget which model number. Intel i5 Quad Core @ 3.1ghz, 8GB RAM, ATI Radeon 6800, 500GB RAID 1 Harddrive (so the 500GB is constantly being backed up to a second 500GB Harddrive in case one fails) w/1TB External Harddrive. Dual monitors, primary 1920x1080 HD (For my games and other primary tasks), secondary 1280x1024 (On the side of my desk, has Ventrilo, Mumble, Steam Chats, etc open in it). Windows 7 Professional 64 bit.

I didn't think I'd be a Council member until it was offered to me. Heck, I never even thought I'd be a DL until it was offered. I had an idea that the Advisor promotion was coming though because I was the most active person in the EC Program at the time, and the EC Advisor had hinted that they wanted to step down.

I have the turned off personally, I don't care much about my stats or rank and I find the messages to be annoying. As for turning them off overall, I think we should leave them as they are at the moment since some people really like those and might not realize they can turn them back on. Also, according to spidEY there is no way to change the color of the GameME messages, so its all or nothing with them.

Depends on the circumstances. If its basketball I think I have a slight advantage over him, I can beat most if not all of eGO's good soldiers in Basketball, but he has an advantage against me if its a straight up fight.

Advisors are more focused where DLs are more general. If that makes sense, usually Advisors are assigned to a specific area, or even if they aren't they focus on a single area. Activate spends most of his time doing Event Coordinator business, Gypsy is doing Admin Training, Legit Waffle Recruiting, compared to Division Leaders which are responsible for the entire division.

A long time ago, like when I was 12, I was trying to think of a name for Warcraft III Battle.net so I could play with my friends because I finally had a computer that could play things besides Starcraft and other old 2D Games. I had been trying to think of one for about 20 minutes with my friend just making random names as jokes (none of which were intended to be serious) when he said 'Kevimaster'. I liked it, even though he thought it was stupid, and I ended up choosing it. Ever since then it has been my name, and I have only had one website where it has already been taken
