Though they teach you to jump away from grenades in military training, you actually have a better chance of survival by jumping next to the grenade than jumping away....

?? :O

How?

Doesn't getting closer to the gernade increase the chance of getting hit by the shrapnel?

i swear if you go closer to the grenade, you'll just simply die or get badly injured

I find jumping at times to slow to dodge the grenade.....

Some form of solid cover is the best option, if you don't have that around then your pretty much screwed. Jumping away or toward is not going to make much difference. Jumping on it may save your buddy.

Like Hordor said, you are pretty much screwed if you can't find proper cover. However, the explosion shoots the grenade shrapnel in an arch, so if it's on the ground, and you jump right next to it the chance of you being hit is less than if you try to run away from it (granted if you run far enough, you won't be hit either, but a normal frag has something like a 4 second delay, which gives you about 1-1.5 seconds to move after your body perceives the threat). This is why the bouncing mine was invented. The bouncing mine lifts up in the air and then explodes, launching shrapnel downwards as well.

My squad mate jumped next to a grenade since he wasn't aware of the grenade until the last half second and luckily didn't get hit by any shrapnel, though I don't recommend doing anything other than running and diving behind cover (which I did and also didn't get hit by any shrapnel).

With my amazing graphic skills, I tried to draw an explanation:

This theory is only accurate in CS:S...

This theory is also flawed in the sense that not all grenades land completely upright.

Hmm, true fps. And sometimes the grenade could explode in mid air if thrown at times, like cooking a grenade. Though in CSS, you can't cook the grenade.

Like I said, I don't recommend jumping next to a grenade, or doing anything that involves dodging grenades, and if you have to, get behind proper cover.

I'm pretty sure the shrapnel will fly in the same arch on all grenades, but I'm no physicist so I can't confirm that. With the grenades that we used, the safety lever falls off and essentially a ball lands on the ground, so there is no top or bottom.

But if it's in the air, which is highly unlikely that a grenade will stay midair for the duration of the time delay, you're screwed.
