Hey guys, so I recently began the process for enlisting in the Air Force. I did you a year of Uni and decided that I'm not really ready for school. As some of you may know, when enlisting you take the ASVAB and based off your scores out qualify for certain jobs. I recently took my ASVAB and scored an AFQT score of 95%. This qualifies me for any job on the enlistment form I was given by my recruiter.

So here's the real question. Does anyone have any experience in the air force or personally know someone who does? If so, what are some of the best jobs?

First off, congrats on getting that hi of a score. When I went to go take the ASVAB myself, I scored an 89. However, since I was trying to go into the AF Reserves, they didnt exactly have my job field lined up (im wanting to get into the IT industry). Therefore, I decided to decline going into the military.

Second off, my mom is now a retired Master Sargent of the AF Reserves, & my dad is a retired Major from the Reserves as well, so I received a lot of knowledge from them. It really inspired me to go into the military, but do to the lack of fields available within my interest level, I will not be going into the military. Now when it comes to jobs, you need to find something that will suite your interests. So therefore, let me ask you, what are some jobs that youve always wanted to try getting into?

Lastly, make sure to get your body & your mind prepared for the punishment that youre gonna go thru. It is mostly a mental game that they will hit you hardcore with (ive read that its 80% mental & 20% physical), so make sure to get yourself up to the minimum requirements for weight as well as for exercise (push-ups, sit-ups, jogging 1.5 miles in less than 12 minutes, etc).

One more thing; we all here at eGO are extremely proud of you for taking this step not only as a human, but also as a soldier & will be praying for your time in BMT. Make sure to keep your mouth shut (unless you feel that you absolutely need to say something). Do your best to listen to the instructor. Also make sure get your body conditioned for their sleep pattern since you will be waking up at 5a (sometimes a lil earlier) for morning workouts & other such great stuff. Also if you do stay with this group, you will receive a medal for military service (we have multiple members in this community that are members of various branches of the armed forces). I hope this helps ya out.

Thanks for the encouragement. With the high scores I'm hoping I'll have a choice to do whatever I want. It all depends on the availability of positions. I'm looking to do something with computer science, or something in the intelligence field. Possibly linguistics. I've heard plenty about BMT, my dad was in the Coast Guard.

All that's left before I'm sworn in is the MEPS physical that shouldn't be too bad. The recruiter says I wouldn't leave for BMT for at least 6 months. So I've got plenty of time to condition. The physical requirements are extremely easy in my opinion.

I am active duty Air Force as a Tactical Aircraft Maintence Jouryman (crew chief) on A-10 C-models.

Remember that anything you do in the military, be sure you can do something with it after you get out. Don't got be a desk monkey if you don't plan to do so afterwords....... I'm just home from a tdy so my brain is fried but give it a day or so and i may have better advice.

One lil thing that you should know bout when it comes to doin the MEPS physical: if you have certain problems with allergies that can require non-perscription meds (off the shelf), then dont say anything. I made the simple mistake of letting that 1 out because I felt that it was necessary, but come to find out that the military doesnt care bout that. Its more permanent things that they really seek out. They will hit ya hardcore with questions bout your mental state, so be prepared on that. Also since your dad was in Coast Guard, he should be able to teach ya plenty since Im sure that the CG goes thru more demanding BMT than Air Force does, but dont quote me on that since ive never met anyone from the CG.

Im just curious, seeing as how your dad was in the Coast Guard, why did you not wanna go that route? Why did you decide to go into the Air Force instead?

Ya, I've been told to keep my mouth shut about anything medical that isn't permanent. My Dad said BMT wasn't really bad. He says it's a bit rough as far as sleep schedule, but he says the difficult part is the first 2 weeks. Supposedly drill instructors chill out after the first 2 weeks, unless you make a mistake.

I currently live in Colorado so the CG presence is pretty small out here. When my dad was in the CG he was stationed in Hawaii, Italy, then Spain. The CG no longer has international bases which is something I was really looking for. The only reason they did then was because they were LORAN stations. My dad always told me how jealous he was of how the AF treated most of their people. He said that they looked for the smartest and then focused on retention of their members. In turn they're treated the best and have the nicest life style (in general). That was the biggest factor. Plus, I live 20mins away from the the Air Force Academy, so the AF is pretty huge out here.
