As some of my DoD:S brethren are aware, I have notoriously not seen very many movies at all. As a result, I've been wanting to do something on the forums in reference to this, but have always feared appearing as a cheap copycat to Sexy Beast's movie review thread. So while this might appear to be similar, know it is not. I have no knowledge of Producers, Directors, companies, etc. so this is less about knowledgeable reviews and more of a game/betting/disbelief over what I haven't seen.
Here's how it will work:
Once a week anybody and everybody can post the name of a movie. Make sure it's a well-known movie (remember, the point isn't to stump me with an obscure movie--I've not seen plenty of major blockbusters). If you are having a hard time thinking of something, perhaps use the all-time best grossing movies list, or from AFI's Greatest 100 movies of all time list. These suggested movies will form the "Movie Pool".
Once a day anybody and everybody can place up to 10 votes on movies in the Movie Pool. It can be for a movie you suggested, one you didn't, all votes for one movie, votes spread out amongst several movies, whatever you want. You are voting for movies you want me to watch/you think I will enjoy.
Weekly Viewings
Every week I will select the most voted-on movie in the Movie Pool, then:
A) If I have seen the movie already, I will announce this and no CC will be awarded for any votes on this movie. If there are multiple movies "on top" that I have seen, this will continue until we reach a movie I have not seen (it won't take much). At that point, we move on to
B) If I have not seen the movie, then I will watch it for the first time. I will then score the movie 1-10 and pay out the following:
If you were the one who added the movie to the Movie Pool (first suggested it) you will get 2,000 CC x the score I give it. (aka if I score the movie 10/10 you'll win 20,000 CC, minimum is 2,000 CC if it was horrible)
If you voted for the movie with your daily votes, you will get 100 CC per vote x the score I give it. (aka if you put all 70 of your weekly votes into a movie, and I score it 10/10, you win 7,000 CC)
As you can see, there is possibility for a sort of "all or nothing" thing happening. What if you vote a lot for a movie and I have seen it? You get nothing. But what if you vote a lot for a movie and I HAVEN'T seen it? The higher the chances I have seen the movie, the more likely I would like the movie.
Important Note:
If a movie is a sequel, in a trilogy, part of a series, a follow-up to another movie, etc. in any way, the first movie in that series/set will be the one I watch first. I will only watch movies in proper order. You do not need to suggest the movies in this exact order (maybe you want to suggest the best movie of the series/trilogy), but it is the order in which I will watch them.
It's that simple! We're also going to have some other stuff going on--if you'd like to know what, keep reading.
Side bets
Each week, after I watch a movie/post my "review"/assessment, I will announce the movie for the following week. At this time, you will all know which movie is coming up and you will have the opportunity to, as people who have seen the movie, make side bets on something in the movie. This can be anything you want. Maybe you make a bet on which character I like most/least...or a scene I like the most/least. Maybe something off-the-wall or very movie-specific. No spoilers allowed.
After a few days of suggesting things, we'll choose the best side bet(s). I say we, because it's partially my decision and partially all of you saying "Oh yeahhhh let's do that one!" since I've never seen the movie.
If you suggested the Side Bet we use you will get 1,000 CC.
Winnings for bets within the side bet will vary (depends on the Side Bet--if the potential results are 2 or 20).
Marathons
For movies with a sequel/in a trilogy/in a series, if we have several/all of the movies in the Movie Pool and getting votes then I will do a marathon on all of these in one week. Along with the normal CC payouts, we will have other special giveaways or Side Bets specifically for marathons.
Live movie viewings
Every once and a while (usually announced) we'll have a live movie viewing. I will get in Vent and you can all jump in there with me. I will announce when I am starting the movie (if you want to start at the same time) and then watch it live with you all there "with" me. Again, no spoilers. I'll give live commentary (which I promise to be amusing--especially if it's a movie you have no idea how I've never yet seen) and we will probably have other things going on with them.
Other awards/competitions
As we go, there will be more (better than CC) awards for other things, such as best suggester, best voter, best Side Better, best at coming up with Side Bets, etc.
I will start this in June, so that gives you all a little over a week to suggest and vote for the first movie.
