The official "Plan DDAY" Thread

On June 6, 1944, allied forces carry out the largest sea invasion to the beaches of Normandy. Countless lives were lost in this invasion.

Now I am asking you:
As supreme allied commander, WHAT would you have done?

ME: I would have bombed the bunkers machine gun nests and anti air guns for days, prior to the Sea invasion.

Now, its your turn!!

The name of the game was surprise so I think it would have been hard to do any thing else, except more air support during the landings perhaps.
 
um just sayin this will turn out to be a troll thread and these water were not meant for many.

but I am pretty sure they did bomb before the invasion. They use to send out small boats to the beach and locate mines to see where they were and most of the bombs and artillery became a hazard on the beach with men sinking and be trapped under the water unable to get their gear off in time. Also they did knock out MG nests and as for AA their was not really a need because the weather conditions were too poor to fly in.

To be honest they did everything they could and it turned out working and winning us the war. I would keep the old plain. Maybe though getting the paratroopers to hit on mark would have made a major punch, but hey it worked out in the end with all the madness going down and what not.

days prior? Surely, if the Allies bombed that long in advance, Rundstedt would have brought forward the panzer corps before the invasion even took place and Rommel would not have been away from the front.

I would have better-measured and judged tides and currents for the actual landings. Additionally, I would have found an alternative to the British sinking the majority of the French fleet. A little more diplomacy there would have gone a long way, Petain or not.

Would have had all the battleships bomb the beach and the bunkers hard for 1/4 a day and then whent in under heavy support fire

...and dutch, the atomic bomb was being created by both america and the german rocket program around and before DDAY. however, we obviously beat them to it.

More specifically, the Germans were way ahead of us. The German scientists sandbagged and lied so that Hitler would not get a bomb. Hitler was still close to getting one until the resistance sunk a barge that was carrying heavy water in Norway.
 
hmm, I agree with DJ.. Also, I would have used lots of smoke when trying to advance on the beaches.. Like blanket the beach with smoke.. And just move forward :)

That would have not helped, not only did the Germans have dug in defenses. For example the US had a hard time taking out dug in defenses in the pacific, the Germans had much better defenses than the japanes did. The Germans also had large guns, similar to rail guns used in WWI that were able to reach out past the cost and cause damage to ships. Instead I would have invaded Spain and moved up from France and Italy where the Germans had less defenses set up. This would let the allies push straight up towards Paris and cut of German supply lines and isolating the coastal defenses.

The Germans could have also done a better job. Yes I know they where bad and nazis and blah but their side still had a large loss of life also, war will be war. The Germans could have swooped down into Russia taking it from the bottom up, this would not only give them access to large oil fields but also loosen up troops that could have been used on the western front. With these troops the Germans could have stopped the invasion, or if the invasion was successive the Germans would have had enough troops to force the allied landing back, just like they did at Dunkirk.
 
I would have used Jinn and Blue to camp behind one of the boats and snipe at the bunkers, Boyle to grab his thompson and spray headshot, Meg to grab that rocket and blast her way through, Dead sight to resetscore, and the rest of us to storm that beach with BARs and Garands setting bombs on everything. :P I am just messing around. Continue.
 
Well Dutch and Blue (and London) pretty much have it dead-on...not much you could do. Bombing ahead of time would have ruined the surprise, and that is a bigger weapon than the results of additional bombing. The only thing that could have been done differently was timing--the attack was planned for June 5, but put off due to poor weather. Well, when they moved the attack to the next day, they didn't adjust the timing for the different tides, factoring in this weather. As a result, the landings, which were supposed to happen much closer to the sea wall, ended up happening up to a quarter-mile out, causing the huge, open, killing fields.

Also, back to the weather issue, the choppy seas caused a lot of the landing boats to take on too much water. These, along with some tanks that were dropped off further out than intended, all sunk (in theory, they planned on getting on closer and setting them right on the breakwater, but the misjudged distance caused them to be dropped in deeper waters).

Lastly, the paratrooper support had issues due to the fields being flooded, so some of them were fortunate to miss their DZs. Simply put, something as simple as timing (or weather, or both) could have made it a whole lot easier.



Also, just want to throw out there that Allied forces DID land in Italy first but it was an absolute mess working their way up North.
