Windows 8! (Update:Microsoft Tablets Announced!!)

Well, lurking a little bit and seeing that there was not a thread on this subforum I took the freedom to make one. This thread is for speculations, opinions, reviews (if you have dl'ed the Release Preview) and pretty much everything related to windows 8 (not to be confused with Windows Phone 8)...I'll be updating this post with news, rumors, links to the downloads of the preview and some other interesting things about Microsoft's latest OS

every comment is well received (except flames, everybody hates flames and I think we're all mature enough to make an educated discussion about this)

I for one think it's going to be a risky move on Microsoft's part, and are mostly on the fence about this OS, while I'm excited for the performance; the Metro UI looks kinda weird, I'll just wait and see by myself if the OS is as good as some people say (I haven't had time to install the release Preview:facewall but one thing I have for sure is that I will get rid of any white/bright/retina-burning theme the OS has on arrival

Windows has unveiled yesterday, in an event that managed to get hype because of the secrecy a Windows 8 tablet made by them called Surface. details on the link below


2 versions of the tablet... 1 with Windows RT (The nVidia Tegra tablet) and another with Windows pro (Ivy Bridge intel core i5)

It looks really pretty, but I don't think the design works well for a mouse and keyboard and no touchscreen.

I probably won't be buying it. I like my Start menu.

I saw those concept UIs, but then I realized they aren't from Microsoft.

I'm probably just going to stick with Windows 7 until Steam for Linux is released, then I'll switch over to Ubuntu or something. I'll make a VirtualBox for Windows so I can still play D3, of course. Unless Blizzard is cool enough to make D3 a Linux title.

yep they got rid of the start button, but you can go to where it was positioned (low left corner)in the desktop view and the metro interface will pop up (the start menu is now replaced by the metro interface)

It's all eye candy, would work for a touch screen or smart phone but I like my start button.

I see that Microsoft still kept IE lol.
I'm not so sure about this, it kinda reminds me a bit of a typical linux design that is made for a touch device or something. I just doesnt say "Windows" to me for some reason. It looks pretty nice, guess im just a little skeptical about it.

No way, I'm satying away from it. It an OS made for a tablet, NOT a dektop/laptop comupter. I'm sticking with Vista 64-bit until something decent comes around.

I'll wait for 9. Unless 8 has an exclusive version of DirectX, I see no point in 'upgrading'.

+1. I was gonna say something along those lines. Also seems like this OS is alot like Windows ME, however theres no time based bug issue to worry bout here. I think theyre trying to make it "too pretty" if theres such a thing. Also +1 for the comment of keeping IE. I wonder when Microsoft is gonna get it thru their thick skull that other browser can easily sweep IE under the rug anyday of the week & have better technology built into them. I will have to say im gonna agree & wait until the next OS comes out.

I agree. This OS looks more and more like eye candy and functionality for tablets, and they're throwing PC optimization aside.

It's compact, it has a search feature built-in that I can use as soon as I click Start; I can see my most commonly used programs, and it has buttons for my user folder, documents, Control Panel, and so on. With the Metro interface, I have to potentially look at an entire screen to find what I want.

I don't think that Microsoft will ever stop including IE with Windows. As a majority of personal computers are running Windows, making IE available on a fresh installation of Windows makes people more likely to use it, especially if many people don't install a different browser. This gives IE a greater browser market share, which I'm sure Microsoft wants.

Plus, Microsoft wants their OS to be as easy to use as possible. If they stop including IE, users have to install a browser themselves before they can get on the Internet. I think it would be unlikely that Microsoft would be able to include a different browser by default, due to licensing or copyright or something. (I don't really know any of the legalities; I know Firefox comes installed with Ubuntu, however I don't know if Canonical can just do this because both Ubuntu and Firefox are open-source, or if they had to get permission from Mozilla first.)

The metro interface works just exactly the same as the start menu, you press the windows key, and type something and BAM! search in metro, also, The desktop is not going anywhere, metro is just "the new start menu"
