Dota 2 Worth It?

So I got an email earlier today about purchasing Dota2 through steam for $40 (http://www.dota2.com/store/itemdetails/57939587?appid=570). I know that it is going to be free to play at some point in the future. I really enjoyed DOTA back in the day and got into HON for a while.

My question is with it going to be a free to play game, should I spend the money now so I can start playing it, or should I wait. As I am sure many of you have betas of the game is it worth it, what are your opinions on it etc.

I personally love it. No surprise there. I would not pay for it, however. I think the cost is unjustified. That being said only you can evaluate it's value. There are still beta keys in the wild keep in mind.

Lastly, I think the game is probably 6 months from release.
 
Oh right. I think if I was more into customizing it might be worth it because of the items. You get 2 full sets, right?
 
So it appears that you have to purchase these if you want them? Is there a way to unlock them at any time in the game?

Im just wondering because I havent really looked into it that much and from the sounds of it you will have to pay for things unlike how DOTA was originally.
 
After every game, you have a chance of finding items and when you level up.

Its because to buy keys off of people it costs about $40-$50 depending who you buy it from.

By placing it at $40 while throwing in cosmetic items, it makes people want to buy from valve, while simultaneously forcing key sellers to drop the price. Win Win, loss for the sellers
 
The items that you get from purchasing this, are they only for customization and they dont have anything to do with how well the Hero is or anything. Like they dont add bonuses and what not?

I just want to make sure of that real quick. I'd just wait if this were the case, not that I support purchasing things that improve your character either. I just dont feel like spending the money on something to make my character look better is really worth it.

Yeah they are purely cosmetic. Not like Tf2


and you dont have to spend money on cosmetics, they have a chance to drop after each map, and you get one on level up.
 
ok, thanks everyone for your input. I think I will just wait it out for now or until I find a beta key or something.
 
You could ask someone that will go to the Dota 2 International if they wanna give you their Beta Key aswell
 
To me, DOTA2 is definitely worth the money. It blows LoL and HoN right out of the water. It's graphics and gameplay are just unmatched by the other two, and they keep the heroes balanced...for the most part.

When its free to play, and the competition for it are also Free to Play, I wouldnt say its worth the money with the other alternatives, unless your really into cosmetic stuff.

ALSO,
Ive played both Dota and LoL, and the gameplay of Dota does not seem better(In my opinion).
