So I figured to help get some more interest into Tribes Ascend, I'd record some gameplay and upload it to youtube. Problem is, I record full rounds, each around 10 min - 15 mins of gameplay at 60 fps (though I've been trying to get it to 120 fps using fraps, but that's a different issue). Anyways, I took a look at the files, and they are BIG. One 15 minute video is about 60 gigs, uncompressed, which is to be expected. So my next step is to get these files encoded so that I can upload them into Youtube. For that, I am looking for advice. I rather use something free since I don't want to spent tons of money on the software. I'm not looking for the best, just the best that's free. Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated.

record smaller videos or make frag compilations. anything thats going to encode a 60gig file is not going to make it much smaller. even if you get a great compression ratio - your looking at 5-15 gigs, which is still huge. I say record with this( i like this overlay for non-steam games and games in which the steam overlay does not work - like diablo 3)

The recorder is easier to modify and use. also has a nice "shoot to record functionality" thats fun to experiment with.

But if all else fails, just take your big vids and shorten them - fill your channel with tribes stuff. Matches are going to be 100% action packed - every game.....

I realized the same thing you just said feather. I enabled Fraps to split out the video into 4-5 GB amounts instead of one large, massive file. In addition, a friend suggested using Xvid, and just use the Xvid MiniConvert to compress the files into usable upload files.

Update: So the new recordings are split into 3.9GB at max; so a 15 min match has about 5 parts to it. I'm using Xvid MiniConvert to compress these files even more, down to about a quarter of the original video size. Here's the problem: There's a slight loss in performance, a lil bit of stuttering here and there, which isn't so bad. However, usually after about halfway through the compressed file, sound is loss completely. So it starts with sound and goes on for about a minute or so, then it's not there for the second half of the video. Any suggestions?

music background?
Possibly split the audio from the video originally...then add it to the compressed vid at the end...

but the music as a VERY slight background noise, maybe a slight drum and base or some easy rock...could cover the fact. Or - OR:

You could make a few where you commentate over them and discuss tactics of the game.

Another Update: Ended up using Microsoft's Movie Maker, which beautifully compressed the videos substantially, but still keeping the clarity pretty well, and the audio remains throughout the playthrough. Took a 63GB video file and it compressed it down to about 3GB. I've already uploaded two videos, one was the first of 5 that made up a match, the second with the remaining four compressed together in sync. So about 30GB of video files are now just a lil over 1.2GB (about 15 minutes of gaming in Tribes).

I'm going to keep messing around with the configuration for FRAPS so I can get the videos uploaded the way I like it. But I've definitely made some good progress on this. I'll be posting more gameplay of Tribes in the future (got another 4 matches to compress and upload).
