Alternative Operating Systems

Anyone have any views on alternative operating systems. I recently installed Ubuntu. It seems kind of funky and I know there is a lot of compatibility issues. I don't really know much about it. Any thoughts?

Ubuntu is one of the easiest to use Linux distributions.
It's extremely user friendly and includes an awesome GUI.

I haven't heard a lot of compatibility issues with Ubuntu besides the obvious, it isn't a Microsoft OS.

Are you having any issues with it?

i am currently using ubuntu and you need a beast of a computer to run simple CSS.

Sigh, i just had an evening from hell.... I decided that I allocated too much memory for the ubuntu partition and decided to remove it and expand my windows 7 partition to it's original size. Stupid me forgot to make a backup of the recovery within the system since they do not provide CD's with new computers. There I go restarting the system and cannot get it to boot because stupid "Grub" took over. Had to track down a Windows 7 Recovery ISO on Pirate Bay using my fiance's Macbook. BLEH, Was planning on playing a whole lot of CS:S tonight, not dealing with this crap. Lesson Learned : Screw Ubuntu!

ubuntu looks kinda cool my friend had ubuntu and Vista installed in the same time but Hey its free no reason to complain or u could give up 100bucks for Windows 7

I use fedora, and it is my favorite operating system by far compared to all the others. I dual boot it with windows, for I cannot lose my precious video games. :'(

That brings back memories.

The only time you should use Linux is when you have a reason to. It's not a gaming OS, although some people are trying to turn it into one.

And I use the Mint distro, it's got the most features by far and is the most newbie-friendly.

I used SUSE and Ubuntu dual boot with my vista before, they are good as long as you know what you're doing, got the same problem before when I first tried linux. And Johnny is right, Linux is not a gaming OS yet, but someday it will be, and most games are windows based.

I had the exact same problem my laptop smooch, You can also fix this by creating a start-up repair disk and running that!

Linux is cool to mess around with, but if you want to play games on it use windows for that.

I use Windows instead of Ubuntu only because of the fact that I know every program I have works on it. Sure, I could use Wine but even that has issues with certain programs.

I prefer Ubuntu, but I'm stuck with Windows for now.

Some good has come from Ubuntu. I had a laptop that had a problem booting up and refused to boot from ANY drive. I decided to give the dreaded Ubuntu a try and it loaded like nothing! I decided to then attempt to replace Ubuntu with a Windows 7 OS CD I had (that I of course obtained oh-so legally). My Window 7 CD loaded with no problems and replaced the operating system. I now know if I have any boot problems to pop in that stupid Ubuntu CD. I've also learned that if you have any REALLY out-of-date Laptops, Ubuntu is a great OS for you to use because it will help computers that have minimum RAM and Harddrive space to operate at a much faster speed. Just some food for thought! Hope everyone has a good night!
