Agreedm Ubuntu is the best. It's what I use when I am programming.

Make sure to look at other distros! Great ones include Mint (a fork of ubuntu) with it's Cinnamon desktop, Debian, the upstream "parent' of ubuntu, with all its great customizability, and Fedora, the RH supported distro. There's much to see and more, besides Ubuntu.

I'm perfectly happy with Win7, may very well buy myself a Surface tablet.
Still don't trust Win8, though.
