i was just wondering because as time progresses so will graphics and i want to make sure ill be prepared for the newer stuff.

SLIng two 8800GTX is going to run you like 600 dollars... that does not at all compare to the roughly 300 dollars it is going to cost for you to SLI two 9600s... if you are going to spend money on stuff listed there, just grab a 9800GTX and pick another one up later if you need to.

Graphic/Video Cards really aren't going to be advancing that much now. The quality that they can produce is nearing the limit. Besides, hardware companies are behind the software companies. So, hardware is being scrambled to catch up. Personally, I say wait and save money in the long run. I doubt much better will come out in a year's time. Sure, some small advancements will be made through the release of new cards, but nothing dramatic is going to happen.

my buddy has 2 8800 Ultras (SLI) on n intel quad core at 3.2 ghz and ive seen it play quite a few games now.. he brags about it.. but honestly.. its overkill on the pricetag for the performance increase. And his room is like a furnace 24/7

He still gets under 60 fps in Crysis on full settings+high resolution.

Biggest thing i look at on a graphics card is memory bus. I used too have a 256bit Nvidia 6800GT that had 256 mb of ram on it.. and it ran all if not all my games faster than this replacement card (save Oblivion with all the texture mods i have) i have now which is a Nvidia 7600GS with 512 mb of ram at 128bit memory bus. And this thing has higher clock speeds all around.

just remember.. memory bus makes a HUGE difference for graphics cards. It could be a gfx card clocked insanely high but if the memory bus is say 128 bit or (GASP!) 64 bit its gonna run slow like a turtle no matter what you overclock.

I have a 9600gt with 512mb ram and 256 memory bus.
It pwns my old 7900 gt which was 256mb and 256 respectivily

its Core Clock is 680mhz
Memory Clock 1600Mhz
RAMDAC : 400Mhz

its pretty decent gets bout 80 FPS on DOD:S and CSS on highest with some AA

sli 9600 will be better then a 8800gt. its already proven. so if you want to go cheap, just get 2 9600, or even a 8800, they both are very cheap now.

Once you 'max' out Source on full settings, it is over. I say once you can hold over 80ish FPS at all times, that nothing else really helps. I am well above this FPS on 1 8800GTX. Of course I have never tried to play Crisis.
Additionally the longer you wait, the more the price drops.

yeah thats true. but right now i dont think i dont need a new video card becasue my 8800GS gets the job done with playing everything on highest however i havent tried COD4 yet. my next investment is most likely a new Mobo and CPU because if i get a new video the CPU with most likely bottleneck my Videocard.

Just to flex some knowledge about the 9600GT, if you SLI the 9600GT it's the first graphics card to actually go over aorund 40% efficiency it gains about a 90% increase in performance in SLI for a meager $400
